The David Bowie Tribute Deck.
Commander Deck Help forum

I feel like a deck centered around some of the themes and concepts from David Bowie's music would be a good way for the MtG community to immortalize him in another fashion. The only real restriction I want to put on this is that I don't want it to be goblin themed deck. We have enough goblin decks as it is. I want this to be something that would be sort of unique to his name and legend, as well as being at least semi playable in a group.
Maybe something based around space and aliens. The only real thing I can think of when it comes to this based on the MtG lore is the Eldrazi, which are pretty much aliens by nature. Then again, mind-shattering abominations of nature forged in a distorted reality between the planes doesn't seem like a fit for Ziggy Stardust.
Any suggestions are welcome. What we need is a general and a theme that fits something that Bowie tried to draw upon or happened to like.
Bowie didn't do much with aliens...his 'demons' were almost always psychological: Ziggy Stardust, Thin White Duke, Major Tom, the clown from Ashes to Ashes, and of course the suit wearing performer from the eighties. Also, there is the huge bulk of movies he played in.
As alulien said, one of his most famous roles is that of the goblin king, the king of Faerie. But he also played in a vampire film (Hunger). I think it should be a five colour deck to represent his multi-faceted performance and androgyny.
Perhaps the Reaper King? Or perhaps better yet, the new ally General Tazri: that why you can create a deck that has all the colours, and you can reflect the wide array of characters he played.

@ Programmer_112 : lol. Indeed, a must
and perhaps Throwing Knife or the Blade of Selves as a reference to the fact that he named himself after the Bowie knife.

Moonglove Changeling feels very Bowie to me.
Rebel Rebel Informer
I'm not sure if s/he's a Young American but IS a Young Pyromancer. Nice bit of androgyny there, too.
We could be Ajani, Mentor of Heroes, just for one day. Or even a Changeling Hero, if we feel like making some ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-changes.
My last suggestion is Slip Through Space, a tribute to the ultimate astronaut, who was always ahead of the times. Fitting, this is from the latest set.

This could very easily end up as a control/aggro/burn deck. I'm going to add the suggestions here to a new one and we'll see what happens.

Karona, False God seems to follow up with the androgyny theme so for now that'll be the commander. Child of Alara might be another option, but it doesn't fit as well.

For flavor you have a ton of options. Off the top of my head you might consider: Widespread Panic in Detroit or Death's Duet for "Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family."
Bowie's career was so long and diverse that trying to capture all of it at once might fail for lack of focus. I'd suggest picking a specific persona, album, or even song as your theme. Design a tribute deck around just that. For example, "Beauty and the Beast" works well for any legendary pair like Pia and Kiran Nalaar or Tibor and Lumia. There's probably a better pair someone can come up with than either of those, though.

I quite like Anax and Cymede but they would limit the colour choice.
False God was the first Commander that lept to my mind.
I'd love to use this Sliver Hivelord, but that would skew the deck in an entirely different direction.

Is there a card that would be able to put Akroma into exile on other people's turns?

But, I mean... he was the Goblin King so gobbos are obligatory.
On a more serious side, all of his personas were really androgynous so you could play off of a weird control (your perception) list with Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver or something? The only other mtg character who comes to mind is Alesha, Who Smiles at Death but I think her story more implies she's a hermaphrodite who identifies (post puberty?) as female. I think. It was a while ago I read her UR so please forgive if I've remembered wrong.
