I noticed that there was no deck list for Prime Speaker Vannifar . If you need a list, I’ve been doing some research with my build Vannifar cEDH and currently it’s been winning about 80% of the games it plays against tier 1-2 decks.
May 7, 2019 10:54 p.m.
goconnor 80%!! Better create a BEYOND MAXIMUM POWER tier :D
May 8, 2019 10:27 a.m.
goconnor, do you have any data for this?
I haven't mentioned this yet but I've been doing some tests with different Vannifar decks, and I'm trying to figure out which is the best combo line. I plan on posting the results here when I've completed the analysis.
If you have been recording your games, this could help.

Cymorg, I pretty recently started collecting very detailed data, but I can post it once I get a considerable amount, if you don’t want detail, I can just tell you that I currently have a 22-8 win to loss ratio (currently on a 7 win streak mostly against one of my friends who has a nearly optimized Teferi, Temporal Archmage deck).

Cymorg if you're looking for the optimal vannifar list/lines, I'd recommend checking out https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/vannifar-evolution-101-competitive/#c3485341. Though I'm no Vannifar aficionado, these guys have it down. They've put in many hours of testing.
With that in mind, goconnor for your data to be most helpful, could you also add to your notes what you were up against? You mention an almost optimized teferi deck, so I'd assume it's just missing like 'nacle and transmute / something similar, but if those decks are all 'almost optimized' in that they're restrained by budget considerations or pet-cards etc. then please keep in mind that will have some sway in your data and the way that it's viewed.

So what's the decklist that made Niv-Mizzet, Parun competitive? I'd really love to see it.

If you do not mind me asking, I've seen that Niv-Mizzet Reborn has gotten a lot of fanfare here as the replacement for General Tazri , but when I took a look at the primer (and I realize that it is still early in testing), it looks like Niv as a backup plan only actually grabs 1 piece of the combo engine consistently, and the vast majority of his decklist cannot leverage the draw power attached to the commander.
I realize in cEDH, the commander is often the backup plan, but this seems important to note, in addition to his much more temperamental casting cost over Tazri, thoughts?

Niv-Mizzet Reborn isn't a backup plan. It's an outlet for the infinite mana generated by Food Chain .

The update is several posts up, from Sigi. Perhaps they forgot to add it to the description?

I'm getting a little itch to play a control deck. I'm leaning Azorius, either Geist of Saint Traft , or Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper , the latter of which doesn't seem to have a win angle other than grinding out the table and praying? Any thoughts on those two?
My third option is maybe Tatyova, Benthic Druid , who seems a bit more versatile by having green, but I'm still leaning Azorius.
Anyone have experience with the abovementioned generals?

Why did we remove Scion Druid Win for
Scion of the Ur-Dragon
?
As time goes on I feel that
Hermit Druid
is less and less competitive, but I believe it is still the optimal way to play Scion.

If you care more about color combination, I'd suggest you play Grand Arbiter Augustin IV or Brago, King Eternal instead of any of those. Of course, the choice depends on your meta so it's hard to make calls without that, but generally I think that both of these would hold their ground better than the 3 you mentioned.
As for what would be the best of your picks, again, this depends a lot on your meta. But generally, I'm a fan of Tatyova, Benthic Druid here. Green offers more for control game plan than white does and Tatyova itself makes a good use out of green's ramp spells. Locally, creature-heavy staxy meta that doesn't care much about graveyards, we have a Tatyova turns deck that does strangely well considering that she's usually the lowest ranked deck at the table by this list. There are always bigger threats than her to worry about, she dodges most of our stax relatively easily and she can get out of control quite easily. I'm more than a bit biased here and she works in my specific meta that might be quite different from yours, but I've seen Tatyova do stuff that make competitive decks scared. Stuff that I don't really think either Geist or Noyan can pull.

There was some talk before about having monthy updates. Is that still happening? Or have they happened and they're just buried in the comments?

thegigibeast, the owner of this page, has been absent due to personal issues, so we haven't been able to issue updates via the update function. Our WAR update was given in a comment 8 days ago on May 6.

This is our update for War of the Spark. Please note that these placements are preliminary and will be subject to change over time. Please continue commenting and giving us feedback as you play with these cards so we can re-evaluate their position on the list for future updates.
WAR Commanders
God-Eternal Oketra - Mid Power
Oketra is good at creating a board full of creatures if she survives a turn cycle, but no combos have been found that are strong enough to push her into High Power.
God-Eternal Kefnet - Competitive
Kefnet is a combo piece and a value engine in one that also comes with a big body to block Tymna. Has a 1.5-card combo with Scroll Rack and extra turn effects.
God-Eternal Bontu - Mid Power
Bontu doesn't create card advantage unless you really build around it - think Gravecrawler, Bitterblossom, etc., no combos have been found that are strong enough to push it into High Power.
Ilharg, the Raze-Boar - Mid Power
Strong, unique effect in the Command Zone, but only having Red and colourless is a bit limiting in terms of big creatures.
God-Eternal Rhonas - Mid Power
Can be an Elfball finisher in the Command Zone, but compares unfavourably to Ezuri, Renegade Leader in that regard.
Fblthp, the Lost - High Power
Has competitive potential as a combo with Proteus Staff, but the combo is expensive and his shuffle effect makes it very fragile.
Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin - Mid Power
A different way to build Mono-R Goblins, looks less combo-centric than the Krenko, Mob Boss.
Tomik, Distinguished Advokist - Mid Power
Great at hosing Crucible/Wasteland type decks and it's a cheap creature.
Massacre Girl - Mid Power
Can create some crazy removal chains, but it's probably not going to be too consistent most of the time. There's also no clear path to victory that benefits from having access to her effect in the Command Zone.
Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion - High Power
Really powerful card selection and mana engine, but non-commander centric Mono-R combos aren't quite consistent enough for Comp.
Mowu, Loyal Companion - Mid Power
Having Trample and Vigilance plus an ability that lets it grow more might make Mowu a workable Voltron commander.
Niv-Mizzet Reborn - Maximum Power
It's Food Chain Tazri with higher potential for better outlet printings in the future. While the commander is new, the deck itself has proven its viability over a long stretch of time, so Maximum Power is appropriate here. Niv also has utility advantages over Tazri and is able to deterministically win through an opposing Aven Mindcensor. One of the two may be moved down if the other emerges as the better choice.
Roalesk, Apex Hybrid - Mid Power
This has some potential when using Clone effects as single-use sac outlets to get the double proliferate effect. Still a bit clunky all in all, but an interesting option for a UG counters + clones strategy.
Feather, the Redeemed - High Power
It's cool to see a sort of card advantage engine in Boros.
Storrev, Devkarin Lich - Mid Power
Could work well for a BG Superfriends list, but falls a short when compared to Meren otherwise.
Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves - Mid Power
Tolsimir mixes a lot of things at once, which runs the risk of creating an unfocused deck.
Other Changes
Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker - Competitive -> High Power
Xantcha, Sleeper Agent - High Power -> Competitive
Sai, Master Thopterist - Mid Power -> High Power
Godo, Bandit Warlord - High Power -> Competitive
Vela, the Night-Clad - Casual -> Mid Power
Prime Speaker Vannifar - High Power -> Competitive
Niv-Mizzet, Parun - High Power -> Competitive
Added 4C Rashmi - Curious Control, Ramos Engine Thief, and Opus Thief to their respective Competitive deck tabs. Sample lists for the remaining new competitive Commanders will be added in the next update.
Why is Anafenza still in Mid Power?
While an Anafenza deck can be built to compete in High Power games, this Abzan hatebears shell works better with Tymna the Weaver + Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa. While Anafenza is a hate piece against Hulk decks, Reanimator strategies, and Gitrog, she doesn't do enough to stop these decks from setting up for their win conditions. Having a strong draw engine in the Command Zone makes it easier to both stop other decks and get closer to your own win condition. Losing out on Tymna in the command zone is not worth the effect Anafenza provides.
This is all for now. We'll be back with another update soon!
