[Arena Historic] Approach of the Second Sun

Arena WB (Orzhov)

Baxitus

Note: This deck is a fun deck and has not been developed for ranked use!

This deck is based on 3 cards: Solemnity + Nine Lives to incapacitate the opponent and Approach of the Second Sun to win the game.

Nine Lives prevents all damage on you until there are 9 counters on it - then it leaves the game. If it does, you have lost. But with Solemnity, Nine Lives doesn't get any counters! So most opponents can only look stupid while I am looking for the Lands and Approach of the Second Sun.

Overall, I win a lot with it. It's also very funny when the opponent attacks several times, then alternately looks at Solemnity and Nine Lives before conceding.

The matches take a relatively long time because I first have to draw 7 lands and 2 Approach of the Second Sun. In addition, many opponents start to stall in their hopeless situation.

First it is important to get Nine Lives + 2x Solemnity on the battlefield. To do this, you have to mulligan until the following conditions are met:

  1. Solemnity + Nine Lives on hand or Solemnity + Grim Tutor / Mastermind's Acquisition / Scheming Symmetry or Nine Lives + Grim Tutor / Mastermind's Acquisition / Scheming Symmetry

  2. At least 2 mana of different colors (3 are better)

As soon as Solemnity + 2x Nine Lives is on the battlefied, you can relax and have to see that you get 7 lands + 2x Approach of the Second Sun in hand.

Grim Tutor / Mastermind's Acquisition / Scheming Symmetry is primarily used for Approach of the Second Sun, as soon as you have 2x Solemnity. If you have these 2x, you can then use them to draw lands. It is recommended to keep 1x Grim Tutor / Mastermind's Acquisition on hand in case the opponent destroys a Solemnity and you need a second one again quickly from your library.

You have to be careful with Scheming Symmetry! If you play this at the beginning, when the opponent doesn't yet know your tactic, it is relatively safe. Then the opponents usually draw a card that is good for their own strategy. However, if you play Scheming Symmetry after Nine Lives and Solemnity are on the field, there is a high probability that your opponent will be looking for a card that destroys enchantments.

It is important that you have 2 Solemnity on the battlefield and as soon as one is destroyed you can immediately place a new one. Otherwise it can be that the opponent destroys it and directly makes the Nine Lives full. So always have a second backup solemnity on the battlefield!

If a solemnity is destroyed, get it back in hand with Brought Back or Restoration Specialist. I would basically leave Restoration Specialist on hand so that it is not destroyed, if you need him.

If the opponent sends your Solemnity into exile with Banishing Light, Conclave tribunal or Ixalan's Binding, destroy this enchantment with Light of Hope. With a white opponent it doesn't matter what kind of enchantments he has on the battlefield: keep Light of Hope in hand in case Banishing Light, Conclave tribunal or Ixalan's Binding comes!

If the opponent sends your Solemnity into exile or you can no longer retrieve the enchantment from the graveyard, then get a new one from the library with Grim Tutor / Mastermind's Acquisition as soon as possible! Scheming Symmetry is not suitable here because the opponent then directly draws the next card with which he can destroy Solemnity again.

Weaknesses:

  • Cleansing Nova and Ugin are an instant lose. These remove Nine Lives from the field despite Hexproof and you lost immediately. However, these cards are not played that often.

  • Cards with "lose life". Nine Lives prevents damage done. Damage makes you lose life, but losing life is not damage. If a card makes you lose life instead of dealing damage, then Nine Lives is useless! Vito combined with a lot of lifegain is deadly and Grim Tutor also makes you lose 3 lives.

  • Questing Beast. If your opponent plays this creature, you have practically lost because Nine Lives can no longer prevent damage.

  • Mill. If the opponent mills you 3 Approach of the Second Sun, you no longer have a win condition. In addition, these opponents mostly empty your library before you even have the 7 mana + 2x Approach of the Second Sun.

Nevertheless I win about 3/4 of all games in the play queue BO1 and In general, the deck is a lot of fun.
