Pre-Oath of the Gatewatch changes. —Jan. 15, 2016

Now that the full set has been spoiled, it turns out there's only 1 card in Oath of the Gatewatch that I wanted to add to this deck, but of course doing so meant cuts and reworking stuff and so I changed a few cards around in the meantime.

  • Steel Hellkitefoil - I'm not sure why this wasn't in the deck way earlier, but that oversight has now been corrected.
  • Thundermaw Hellkitefoil - I know exactly why this wasn't in the deck originally (budget), but that's not (as much of) a concern anymore, so with the reworking of the list this has now made its way onto it (and helped lower the overall curve a smidgen in the process).
  • Pathbreaker Ibex - This thing is insane, even if it's (somehow) the largest creature I have when it attacks, that's a +3/+3 boost across the board (and trample!), and the reality is it's basically always going to be at least +5/+5 in this deck, if not much larger. The way this interacts with the other cards already in the deck that grant additional combat steps though is simply sublime.
  • Ogre Battledriverfoil - This honestly should have been in the deck for ages, but a "kind of useful, but mostly just silly and potentially pretty bad" card that was near and dear to my heart has been sitting in its rightful place for quite a few deck revisions; this time around sentimentality lost. This guy is rad though, so I'm not too sad about that in the grand scheme of things.
  • Soul of the Harvestfoil - I was considering a few cards as possible replacements for one that, while neat, I've finally decided wasn't really what this deck wanted to be doing (even if it had previously probably won me games, albeit in conjunction with other cards that are admittedly also great on their own), and after some deliberation the draw power/stompiness/synergy with Omnath 2.0 that is this card won out over the other options.
  • Grove of the Burnwillowsfoil - This was my Christmas present to myself, if it wasn't so expensive it would have been added to the deck long before now (was really hoping they might reprint it in Modern Masters 2015, but alas).

Love this deck, I really want to make a Commander Deck with Ruric now!

I think you should add Kessig Wolf Run. Also, Domri Rade, Beastmaster Ascension, and Decimate might be worth taking the 6 damage for. This is a great deck, +1 from me

Dat new Enchantment "Zendikar Resurgent": I think it would be worth the 6 damage. Your thoughts on it?

@snotice: While I'm probably not going to add it to this deck for reasons of adhering to my chosen gimmick (considering it for some of my other decks though), I agree, Zendikar Resurgent seems like the sort of thing that would be worth getting punched by Ruric for casting.

@ThoAlmighty: All of those cards are great and would probably make this deck better, but none of those are creatures (and Kessig Wolf Run isn't in the deck because another card is, for flavor reasons).

Nice deck. I actually made my own Ruric Thar deck quite recently. Had some luck play testing, and I think there is at least one card that would do your deck some good. Not great in all Ruric Thar decks, but since you only have 2 non-creature spells, this card is perfect:

    Nullstone Gargoyle

If you don't add it, I get it, but this card was a real big help when I used it.

@BlacksmithOfDarksteel: Ha ha, oh man, as funny as that would be, I think it would draw too much hate my way - auto-countering spells while punching people for casting them is hilarious and evil and a lot like including Possibility Storm, so I don't see myself ever actually doing that, especially with that CMC (9 mana is rough). I would laugh maniacally if I ever stole one of those from an opponent though.
