Hello everyone! As you may or not have noticed, I have been on a hiatus for a bit. You know...blah, blah, blah...real life stuff. Anyway, I am hoping to slowly wade back into the fray.
So as many of you may know, I was a member and the leader (for a time) of the Tappedout Community Set design team. I had a lot of fun with the project but it was very time consuming. To check out the set see here:
Enough of rehashing the past, what are we doing this time, right? Well this time I am planning on starting a for fun oriented design series. I wil come up with ideas or concepts for a card or mechanic and ask you all to design them. Then I will present some of the highlights of what you guys did with some comments on them.
I am going to try to stretch your minds relating to design, by attempting to different facets of design such as:
- Top-down design
- Designing set concepts
- Designing from art
- Designing for specific types of players (Timmy, Spike, etc.)
- Designing to support a mechanic
- Designing by color or color bleed
- Designing by card types or type matters
- Developing new card/creature types
- Designing mechanics
- Designing odd set cards (unglued, etc.)
And many other concepts. Let me be clear, this is not a competition. I will be posting designs that are submitted and seem interesting (I will not be able to post all of them). I will also be looking for input from all of you for ideas as well. I will be providing input to the best of my ability. I am hoping to both hone my skills and all of yours in reference to card design through this process.
First assignment
So let us get started with the fun shall we. Here is you first assignment. Design your dream card. This is just to prime your pumps and get you thinking. Here are the guidlines:
- Design your dream card - we have all had a card that we wanted to be printed. We all have our reasons for them. Do not worry about rules that WOTC has put on us or why they have put on them. Just design a card you will love. Use any: type, mechanic, idea. Anything.
- That is the only rule. Well that and if you use any artwork, you must site the artwork.
How to submit?
I want people to be able to submit cards/ideas in a variety of ways, so any of these are fine.
- Put your card directly in the thread below. You can put images or just text. This will promote discussing prior to the next presented article.
- Email the design to me. You can do this at [email protected].
Please make sure you include all inforamation needed, for example, please do not submit a card without a casting cost or a creature without a power and toughness.
So now you have your mission, these will be due one week from ther post date. At which point I will post some of the designs with my feedback along with my presentation for the assignment.
If that all makes sense, start designing! Have fun

-4 You get an emblem with "Whenever 3 or more creatures you control attack, tap all creatures and lands target opponent controls, your opponents may not activate abilities or cast spells after your creatures attack."
Starting Loyalty 2
I am a little worried the -4 ability should be -5 so as not to make it broken, and the +1 forces you to return a creature to it's owner's hand, even your own creature if your opponent has none
If there are no creatures in play, the +1 fizzles

Acute Cultivation - 2GG
Instant
Search your library for a land card and put it onto the battlefield tapped.
Draw a card.
Sometimes waiting for nature to take its course is optimal. Sometimes taking the course from nature works, too.
Being a Green player at heart, this card really sings to me. Card-draw in Green has always proven to be very powerful (see: Yavimaya Elder, Harmonize, Explore, Greater Good, etc.) and the ability to fetch any land (not just a Basic) straight to the battlefield is one that ramp players dream of.
In some ways, it's better and worse than Reap and Sow. It's worse in that you can't choose the other mode or Entwine it and the land comes into play tapped, but it's better in that it's an instant and you draw a card (meaning this card would be great in both ramp decks and control, since an instant that gets you a land ahead and replaces itself immediately is exactly what a control deck wants).
March 12, 2013 7:36 p.m.
Spells losing Flash until a specific time would have no effect, since spells only exist on the stack and the cards in your hand would still have Flash.
You'd need to say something along the lines of "You may only cast spells any time you could play a Sorcery until your next turn."
I think that's what you were trying to shoot for.
March 12, 2013 7:38 p.m.

Part the Ocean - UUUU
Legendary Enchantment
-
Part the Ocean is uncounterable.
When Part the Ocean enters the battlefield, each player may cast any number of non-sorcery, non-instant cards from his or her hand without paying the mana cost of each card.
Then, each player splits his or her permanents between two parts of their side of the battlefield in any way that he or she chooses. Players then assign one of their parts to be the West and one of their parts to be the East. Players then divide their life points between these two parts in any way that they choose.
Cards in Wests may not target cards in Easts, and vice versa. Any card that is played affects only one of these two sides, as the caster desires. In combat, only Wests may block Wests, and Wests may only attack another player's West part. Mana pools are separate between East and West and West mana may only be used to play cards in the West part. The East part follows the same rules as the West part. When a player drops to 0 life or below in both of his or her parts, he or she is defeated.
When Part the Ocean is sent to the graveyard from the battlefield, each player reunites both of his or her parts.

@ lockiew if Victory at Any Cost could not be countered you'd never cut off your finger in the first place because the "counter this spell" trigger wouldn't do anything lol

"can't be countered by spells or abilities your opponents control" would work.

It also sets up the awkward moment where you cast Victory at Any Cost, cut your finger off, and then respond to it with your own Force of Will, just to show your opponent HOW SERIOUS YOU ARE.
What now, beeyotch?

Idea for a keyword:
Martyrdom: you may exile this card from your hand to cast a card of the same type as the exiled card that has CMC less than or equal to this card's CMC without paying it's mana cost.
Here is an example card...
Tovlar Footsoldier--mana cost--1W
Creature- Human Soldier
Martyrdom 1 (Pay one mana of any color to activate the.martyrdom ability, exiling this card from the player's hand and letting the player cast a creature card with CMC 2 or less, without paying the card's mana cost)
2/1
This mechanic can be used to cheapen the cost of some spells and be a solid color fixer
March 13, 2013 8:15 p.m.
Guidance of the Fateless--mana cost--3BG
Instant
As an additional cost to cast Guidance of the Fateless, put an oblivion counter on target exiled creature you control. (Another mechanical thing, see post below for description of oblivion counters)
Target creature you control gets +1/+1 and is unblockable until of the turn.
"Always listen to your elders, especially the ones that aren't around." -Thuran, Kualuar Chieftain
March 13, 2013 9:02 p.m.
First of all, props to nightscape for his idea of the BG Kualuar voidling creature, the exile ability and mechanic is interesting; but if this idea develops, we need to be able to keep it in check.
So I propose oblivon counters to keep exiled cards from getting out of hand.
Cards with oblivion counters cannot be targeted by spells and abilites while they are exiled and oblivion counters stay on a card even if they change zones somehow. (e.g. a card moving from the field with an oblivion counter on it to the graveyard or exile, it will retain it's oblivion counter.

@Rewdog yeah not bad idea. However in the set, some of the tribes of this particular plane disrupt exiled cards. This is done by returning them to other zones (either your hand, your graveyard, or shuffled back into the library). The idea may need to be fleshed out some more. With the given card, if your deck relies heavily on exiled cards, I don't think you'd play a card that is against yourself. Here's an example of a card from that set that is anti-exile:
March 13, 2013 11:21 p.m.
Zone change for exile disruption was an option that had ocurred to me, but i guess i was just sort of in brainstorm for R/U/W to the exclusion of almost all else as you can see by the last 5-7 posts. I like it, and the grave caller gives me an idea. One of the subthemes to the set could very well be B/U/? Reanimator.
Examples have been proposed of five color, B/U/G counters, Your BG voidlings, my own favorite R/U/W tempo. What other tribe/theme groups could we include in the set? Any favorites? Anything cool and different? I plan on posting more Parasite cards later this week.

Well honestly, this thread isn't about making a set off of any of our ideas. This thread is dedicated towards people posting their dream cards. If you'd like to continue to expand upon what I have, you may start a new thread. I don't think there should be a hijacking of this one.

Hey, I was wondering for MSE how to format the tap symbol?
March 14, 2013 3:03 a.m.
Timekeeper says... #111
You type in a capital T and then hit the star button at the top. T might also work. OR, if it is part of a cost, it will automatically change T into a tap symbol.
Costs are formatted as such:
Cost: Effect
So, if you have:
T, R: Effect
...you will get the tap symbol, a red mana symbol, a colon ":" and then the effect.
Hope this helps.

@MurasakiRose: Well your art looks great! When I first saw it I was wondering how you found art that matched the flavor of the card so well. Doing the art yourself would certainly make that easier, at least for those of us who can make art like that. :P
@transcendentalmaster: That would be fantastic with flashback spells like Lingering Souls. You could basically keep using them again and again. I like it.

@Timekeeper Thanks for the compliment doesn't hurt once in a while
I'm more suited to traditional painting and drawing than digital, this one is a series of photomanip. You'd be surprise with what you can do with very little stocks and I'd point to you the original pictures and you would barely recognize them. Just wish I had more practice when drawing digitally, it's hard to keep the style that Wizards use for their art.
