Good Budget Deck Ideas

Modern forum

Posted on June 24, 2013, 1:04 p.m. by xzzane

I've decided that the first article that I will write will be geared toward people who are just getting into the Modern format, will include advice on how to build a good budget deck. Does anyone have any good examples of decks or archetypes that would be good for this? I might include some of your decks as examples in the article, but I'll contact you on your page in advance if I plan to feature your deck in the article in case you don't want yours shown.

RDW and Infect?

I think I'll cap the price at about $120 for it to be considered a budget deck in my articles, but thanks anyway DNSolver. I'll be compiling as many budget decks as I can before I put them into my article. So keep them coming!

Red Deck Beats Meta is well under $120, and could use some extra eyes if you want to look into it more.

Deck i made in about 5mins and found was hilarious costs about 30 bucks, and can win its fair share of games against top-tier decks. I haven't updated it to have Path to Exile (which is the only removal in the deck), a playset may add 10 or so dollars, maybe a bit more, but around that to the deck, and it's not too bad for a deck and there's nothing too expensive in it. Heck, you can just trade a Voice of Resurgence for an okay modern deck and a bit of change. Seems like a good deal to me.

RDW, almost any Tron variant, Infect, and U/R Storm are the cheapest decks in the format, IMO.

I modified my deck to be cheaper.

My deck is now estimated at $90, and it only lost a little bit of power. The main cuts were the shocklands and Spell Snare .

Ok, I may end up using your deck, DNSolver, but I have a lot of things I need to work out before I can start the article. Hopefully I'll have it up in about a week though.

My favorite budget deck in Modern is a version of Blistercoil Weird and Paradise Mantle . My take on it is below, running only basics. Ohthenoises's take on it is probably the most popular take on it on TappedOut. That one is also below.

Daww, thanks Matsi883. My weirdstorm is tagged as $78.66

Mono U tron is usually pretty budget, I Fight For the Users! is my version. $109.08

Now that Ancient Grudge has taken Naturalize 's spot in Jund lists Enchantment based strategies become a little more viable now which makes Quest for the Spinning Temple a great budget sleeper. (Unless there is merfolk in your meta, which kind of eats the deck alive.) $39.87

Then there is always RDW. I don't have a list for RDW but they usually float below $100.

Ohthenoises: You're welcome.

xzzane: I think that the best budget decks for Modern are RDW, Infect, Mystical Teachings , Tron, Storm, Blistercoil Weird combo, and Quest for Ula's Temple .

That sounds like a good list to start from. As I'm starting to look into this more, I think I'll put 5 budget decks in each article and explain what makes them good decks for the price. Due to my habit of procrastination this is turning out harder than I thought haha. But tomorrow I plan on finding my first 5 decks I want to use, and I'll contact the users who have those decks. Anyone who posted on the questions I asked have a good chance of making it into the first article.

Just saying, Blistercoil Weird can win on turn 2 (T1: Blistercoil Weird , T2: Paradise Mantle , equip, cast 20 cantrips, Grapeshot for lethal).

Ohthenoises's I Wash My Hands Of This Weirdness is definitely going to be in the article. I've gone around asking random people who had budget decks and I've gotten enough decks to write at least 2 articles I think. Also, I won't always have the best of the best budget decks necessarily; I want to give people a chance to get their decks out there. I'll have at least one deck that's recognized as being very good (Something with a score of around 40 or higher) in each article. Unfortunately I'm somewhat limited by tappedout's deck search function, as I want to ask permission to use a deck in an article rather than just finding one off of some site and throwing it in the article. This will also be my first article, so it'll be sort of a test drive of sorts.

If you'd like Storm and Eggs as a comparison (or any of my other decks), feel free.

Matsi883, I'll probably using Ohthenoises version, as it is more recognized, but if you post another budget deck of yours I'll use it.

Soul sisters, and a good stuff aggro deck like goblins usually is the best option. Most of my decks are budget, so just check out my page!

I just realised that my Dimir Gone Rogue qualifies for this.

OH! perfect for this, considering I'm a brand new player & I've just built my first "real" deck, and by real I mean now that I actually understand the game. I don't like the standard format because I feel it's too restrictive so after learning and learning from this site. This is my 1st modern deck that just happens to be at a budget. I've been buying it this month and am only 4 cards away from owning it! Sheoldred, Whispering One -†-BLΔCK-†- SΔCR‡F‡C3 if anybody play tests against please let me know the results. a 2nd or 20th set of eyes never hurts.

Nobody mentioned Death and Taxes, a fairly cheap very competitive deck, check out my variant The Two Things You Can Count On!

@lookoutimscary: This thread went out a while ago. My suggestion, I Wash My Hands Of This Weirdness, got gone over in xzzane's first article, Spending on a Modern-Day Budget, but he hasn't wrote a second one since.

Unfortunately when I first planned these articles I had a lot more free time than I do currently. It's my hope that I can get to writing them again someday, but until then I'm rather busy with my personal life.
