Modern Deck Help forum

I'm a very new player, with abit of card game knowledge prior. I've bought a deck for my boyfriend and I to start playing but I'm looking to beat him. So this is my first MTG deck (go easy on me.)

Please help me out.

So I begun making this deck with Thunderbreak Regent and looking at existing decks that included him. Dragonlord Kolaghan popped up more often than not so I added him and looked for some cards that seem to combo well with him, Waste Not and Dark Deal came up in a video so I searched for more cards that would make my opponent discard and how i could benefit from it and how i could use it to hurt my opponent.

If you wanna play Thunderbreak Regent, Skred is probably the way to go. You basically play monored control with snow-covered mountains instead of regular ones

i mean if youre looking to just have fun with a deck thats decent enough to win with friends you have a lot of variety. Rakdos midrange decks work just fine. i'm assuming you don't mind if your deck is quite as competitive as the $1000 decks that place at tournaments and what not.

I mean i'm willing to upgrade over time but its just to beat my boyfriend and possibly our friends (who have been playing for a few years.) Are there any substitutions or things i should take out? My overall way of winning is to punish their hand and graveyard but i want creatures in it too

you could consider playing a Megrim deck. you play stuff like that with Liliana's Caress and Waste Not., typically winning with something like Burning Inquiry

For budget purposes, you could create a Waste Not/Liliana's Caress deck with Blightning, Burning Inquiry, Dark Deal, and delve fatties such as Tasigur, the Golden Fang and Gurmag Angler as backup.
