is a Gifts Ungiven combo deck. Though not competitive enough for extreme tournament play, this deck has won many FNM's. One of the problems I am having is the lack of power versus strong midrange decks. With only 3 powerful creatures (Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, Creeping Tar Pit, and Celestial Colonnade), I added a Wurmcoil Engine to my sideboard so that I have more options for mid to late game matches.

My question is that I'm not sure if Wurmcoil Engine is the right card here. I've considered adding my Griselbrand or Grave Titan in its place, and am not sure which is the best one.

-

Wurmcoil Engine

  • Pros: Has pseudo-protection from removal, can kill anything and gains me much needed life.

  • Cons: only 6 power for 6 mana.

-

Grave Titan

  • Pros: 10 power for 6 mana, can become insane with Elesh Norn.

  • Cons: has no protection from removal.

-

Griselbrand

  • Pros: can generate insane card advantage, which then allows me to have the necessary protection versus removal. Can net 2 life and 7 cards a turn with Elesh Norn.

  • Cons: much more difficult to hard cast if the combo fails.

I would like to know other people's opinions on these cards, and if possible to try playtesting with them. I already have, and haven't reached a definite conclusion.

If you're looking for something to help against more midrange strategies, have you considered Batterskull? Its only 5 mana, so it can come down sooner, and it dodges removal nicely. Seems like it would be a good fit to prolong the game and let you gain control and get to your combo.

kmcree - I forgot to mention that, I already have a Batterskull in there.

I know this is partially my fault, but I would appreciate it if you actually looked at a deck before commenting, just to make sure your comment makes sense.

Sorry, didn't see it there. Although you did specifically mention that you only had 3 creatures, and your deck is also organized into custom categories, with Batterskull tucked into the combo section, so it makes it a little harder to find. I definitely did look at the deck.

I like Grave Titan a bit more just because if left unchecked, he's the biggest threat. Plus, who better in a graveyard based strategy than the titan himself?

I would only use wurmcoil if you're having trouble with other large creature based decks.

I like Sun Titan actually. Ultimating a Liliana then bringing her back seems good. Also, you can reuse your dead Snapcasters, and bring back Engineered Explosives for 0 if there are tokens that need killing. At the worst it becomes a piece of land recursion if someone Surgical Extractions your Life from the Loam.

h20 I would appreciate some reasoning before you make a comment.

Unforgivn_II I like Sun Titan a lot, but if I wanted recursion I would use Eternal Witness instead. I was looking for a powerful beater, and 6/6 for 6 just isn't good enough.
