Simic Mill. Could it work?

Deck Help forum

I'm planning to do some editing on my mill deck, and something that came to mind was comverting it to blue/green. This isn't really set in stone, but I am curious if mill would work in those colors.

No

If you're ramping into Increasing Confusions and playing like...TurboFog, I don't see why not.

It also depends on your meta.

Yes, actually. I was going to hold this deck in reserve for this week's Pattern Recognition, but why not show it off?

Yes! Totally. I'd suggest a Sphinx's Tutelage and Compulsive Research and Pore Over the Pages combo, utilizing green to ramp and Fog and use deathtouch or Jaddi Offshoot or whatever. Mention me on your deck if you want more specific help! Cheers, and good luck

You are better off in U/B/g and running Goyf and Scapeshift with Hedron Crab.

Run Blossoming Defense to protect the crab if they do not aim at Goyf.

Goyf is a decoy, but he can be a wincon, if they do not answer him.

Daeyel: Right. He's going to put a 'Goyf into a Mill deck, and toss away one of his chosen colors in favor of Black. is good enough for what he wants to do without going for Random Mill Deck #51953810. And if you're going to suggest this player drop $250-$1000 of 'Goyfs, why not go for the budget route and get 4 Glimpse the Unthinkables for a fifth the cost and will actually contribute to what he wants to do - even though it's out of Wolfsbane706 chosen colors?

Why, yes, it would include Glimpse. If you are going to mill, might as well do it right.

No, it is not cheap.

Daeyel: You're missing the point completely. Wolfsbane706 didn't want a generic Dimir Mill Deck with a side of Green. They wanted a Simic Mill Deck with no sides.

Your suggestions isn't nearly as optimal as you think it is. The BUG (heh) Mill deck can't be a good Midrange Beatstick plan, and a BUG Midrange can't be a good Mill deck. These two strategies are diametrically opposed. One wins via damage, the other via Mill, and neither supports the other very well. Having some board presence is fine, and if that board presence happens to include an alternate wincon to win through hate then so much the better!

But Tarmogoyf is a very poor way to do that. If I was going to splash Black into a deck like this, I would start with suggesting Phenax, God of Deception, who both advances the Mill plan and also provides board presence if you've got some other creatures out. You could also play Assault Formation, which both makes your walls much more dangerous in combat, and allows them to attack in a pinch, as well as buffing your walls/Phenax to mill even more once you run out of mill spells/ramp and need someplace to put all that excess mana.

What many Spikes don't understand is "Optimal" can mean a lot of different things. Sometimes it means "how can I win the game easiest?". Sometimes it means, "How can I make this hilarious deck idea work a little bit better?" Goyf may be the best answer to category #1, but category number 2 dislikes it for multiple reasons.

And Wolfsbane706 wants Category 2.

Phenax mill probably has better cards than a Tarmogoyf to play, but Goyf is still a strong two drop when he could potentially be a 4/5 or larger. Phenax turns him sideways either way, and as a beater or a blocker he's always a threat.

Goyf is also mondo expensive and for a playset, needs somewhere around $350.
