An archtype

Deck Help forum

I expect werewolves to be a interesting new archtype in standard now, any ideas or comments on their effectivness?

Also my take on what a red/green wolf deck could look like Ferocious

Ratchet Bomb = no Werewolves in competitive play.

Hellkite gets nerfed by Ancient Grudge . [full moon's rise]] regens from Ratchet Bomb .

The deck can still have a chance.... Just because there are weaknesses does not mean the deck won't do decently. My deck AHHHWWHOOOOO!!! does well against most decks... It's got a match win/loss of 5/1.

I dunno I think the nihilism about werewolves competitively is just a little silly. I've never actually encountered people running Ratchet Bomb in their mainboard or Steel Hellkite s. Why would anyone waste sideboard space on a deck type that no one plays?

If you're that one guy at the local FNM playing Werewolves people are going to have a hard time dealing with you because they don't have any counter measures.

yeah, Ratchet Bomb is a tap and sac effect, not really different than Day of Judgment . based on your reasoning, agro decks can never be played because your opponnent could be playing a DOJ.

In face, with a werewolf deck, i'd still be much more concerned with DOJ than Ratchet

not really more concerned depends if you are in a group you don't know and people have a ratchet bomb sitting there you can't destroy from turn 2 its pretty sad times from the start but i agree any wrath effect will be sad panda for werewolves but a Ratchet Bomb turn 2 can be pretty disheartening! personally i love werewolves in any sorta game so i hope they play well!

I like the comments! i relize this should not have been in deck help though. That was an accident.

A ratchet bomb played on turn two would mean we would need to be careful, it is unlikely that a werewolf deck would have more then one out at the start of turn two though so losses would be minimal.

The biggest issue would be a midgame ratchet bomb. But in my particular deck if you waited until after they tapped it couldent you respond with a Beast Within or Bramblecrush ?

And Balthasar I like your deck! especially the Manabarbs I was playing around with that idea but i thought id put it in a different deck... still manabarbs would be a very effective way to stop spells so maybe i will try that out..

From my understanding yes if you destroyed the Ratchet Bomb in response to them tapping to sac it you'd be last on the stack so first to resolve so when their effect resolves they wouldn't be able to sac it because it's already gone.

Ugh unfortunatly i believe that im wrong, sacing it is part of the cost so if they activate it's ability you cant target it because it is no longer there.

Cant you respond to the tap?

I dont know.. Rhadamanthus said in Balthasar deck thread that you cant do that, hes one of the people that usually answer Q and A's so im inclined to think he knows. It would be awesome if you could just respond to the tap though.

You can't respond to a cost being paid, and sacrificing the Ratchet Bomb is part of the cost to activate it's ability.

Ratchet Bomb really seems like more of a deterrent than a killer, if you go all out and they catch you by surprise, then yes, you're screwed. If they have one on the field, or you're certain they sideboarded one in, then don't over-extend yourself, hold back on some creatures and wait for a card:Full Moon's Rise to regenerate the werewolves they want to kill.

I don't honestly see werewolves as being on of the strongest archetypes, but that's because of the conditions that they become good under, (relying on your opponent to not cast spells, especially against an aggressive deck), rather than an obvious weakness (Tempered Steel is good even though Creeping Corrosion exists, if you needed some example).

True, but magic isn't all about competitivness (sp?) either. At the end of the day yes, you probably want to win but also at the end of the day you probably want to have had fun too. My take is that while I don't see werewolves winning big tourny's because of the reasons you just mentioned but i also don't see them being a casual only deck, like any deck type people will find a way to make it viable i think.

So i guess in essence i agree with you huginnson =P

question, could you run something that flips creatures on a werewolf to make it flip lol? like Ixidor, Reality Sculptor ? because technically it could be facing face up or down but it isn' called that is it it is called transformed?

Penumbra says... #17

Flipping a card is putting its backside up, double sided cards don't have a back side so any effect that would flip them is ignored. =P

It woulda been awsome in a legacy deck, turn em over to whatever you need yea

Yea, but i can see Ratchet Bomb being in almost everyone's sideboard this standard. With these Werewolves, Essence of the Wild , Parallel Lives , and much more being out there, it would be dumb not to.

A single card is not going to kill the werewolves though, there are numerous defenses against that kind of thing in green, including but not limited to, card:Full Moon's Rise Withstand Death Trollhide and even card:Apostle's Blessing ( not green but you could use it )

Also i love your name

Nvm about apostles blessing =P forgot that protection is only from damage and targeting and such
