Ghave guru of spores?

Commander Deck Help forum

Does Ghave, Guru of Spores have a "specific deck type, as in is he better as a combo oriented deck or straight out mid range ish token style deck? Or both?

I ask because I appearently have a copy of him, and I used to play black white tokens in modern back around 2015( obviously meta is way different now). Is ghave geared toward generic token generation, a few planes walkers, and anthem affects, or is he "better" as a sacrifice combo deck?

Imput please. I have cards laying around from modern and standard back then like... Spectral Procession , Lingering Souls , Nissa, Voice of Zendikar , Bitterblossom Sorin, Lord of Innistrad etc etc to name a few. I also understand cards like Grave Pact are good with him.

Ghave is a bit of an accidental comob commander, in that you don't really have to try to make him combo. That being said, the best Ghave build will be an almost pure combo line. There's enough flexibility though to make any fo the aforementioned stategies work. Hell, I made a lands.dec build with him at the helm a few years back.

Ghave is definitely best as a combo commander, though you can build him straight tokens value if you wanted. Check out my primer if you’re interested in Ghave.

I know it's not the best strategy to use a commander for his identity and not really playing him, but part of me sees him as the best commander for straight tokens, if i went that route that is

Ghave's token generation effect is still very strong, you'd be silly not to play him. However if you find you're not using him, Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa + Tymna the Weaver would be another good token option.

I will probably focus on the token aspect with a few combo plays, how ever I can see how with a lot of mana you can remove counters to make tokens just to sac them just to put them back on him for plenty of cards that have creature dying triggers.

Yes Abzkaban deck is actually a great place to look for ideas. Usually comboing is just like, whoops I think I have a infinite combo, with ghave. I prefer to use combos, and some of those make I finite tokens to win.

I've built Ghave a variety of ways. Reanimator, Edict, Overrun, Aristocrats, even Enchantress... But he's absolutely a powerhouse for Combo. Undeniable.
