Game Day top 8 —May 21, 2017

Soooo, that update title is true, but a bit misleading. There were 13 players, 3 dropped, so I was 8th out of 10 at 1-2-1. Hey, I got a full art foil promo of Glorybringer, though!

Match 1: New Perspectives. Hadn't ever played against it, knew little about it, but I knew not to let him resolve New Perspectives just based on what little I knew. Game 1 he managed to resolve it with the second one he cast, but he didn't manage to win on that turn and he had to go all the way to the last card in his library before he finally found the card (Sphinx of the Final Word) that would let him safely cast Approach of the Second Sun. Game 2 went to me. Game 3 went to time, but he got me on overtime turn 5 just barely. Lost 1-2.

Match 2: W/B Zombies. Game 1 got two copies of Trespasser's Curse out and managed to keep kicking cards back to his hand. Won handily. Game 2 he fired on all cylinders and I was mana flooded. Game 3 I just controlled him into the ground and eventually had 3 Trespasser's Curses on him. Dynavolt Tower and Rise from the Tides did the rest. Won 2-1.

Match 3: Mono-black zombies. Lost game 1 in a somewhat grind game, but he was the one in control. Game 2 I was completely mana screwed. I mulled to 6 and had 2 lands, but 2 Anticipates, so I kept. Only saw one more land over the next 8 or 9 turns, and by that time he had managed to get enough mana to outpace my bounce spells and removal. Never saw land 4... Lost 0-2.

Match 4: Mono-black zombies. Same deck as above, different opponent (there were at least 4 copies of that deck Gerry's-mono-black-zombies out of the 13 people at Game Day). Lost game 1, just wasn't fast enough. Sided a lot, ground out to board control in game 2 and won with Rise from the Tides. Game 3 went to time and I was a couple of turns away from my first Rise from the Tides of the game-- where the hell was it for half of my deck??? However, I managed to keep him at bay with 2x Noxious Gearhulk and a lot of bounce spells, and a single copy of Trespasser's Curse that gave me just enough life to stay alive for the tie. 1-1-1.

Finished 1-2-1. Got a foil full art promo of Glorybringer. I am fine with that. This is a fun deck and the zombie decks don't like it. Even the guy who beat me 0-2 knew that he was lucky I was mana screwed game 2. He might have still won, so I don't want to take anything away from a very good player, but a control deck running on 3 mana for several turns is just not effective.

STAR CARDS OF THE DAY: Two of them, Trespasser's Curse and Rise from the Tides. People assumed that I was a Dynavolt Tower deck, so Rise from the Tides surprised them a lot. Trespasser's Curse is the worst nightmare of a zombie or human deck. HONORABLE MENTION goes to Engulf the Shore even though it didn't show up much at all. When it did, it was a major bummer for zombies.
