First Update —July 2, 2020

This is the first time I have made an update to a deck on tappedout. Usually, with large changes, such as a new card coming out that would significantly change a deck, I would just make a new deck so that I would have the old version of the deck left to look at later. Though making new decks would save information, and show the paths I make to making certain decisions, I feel like I would lose much needed exposure and make me lose out on help I would have in making a list. so, without any further adieu, here is what I'm changing:

-2 Eldritch Evolution -1 Viscera Seer -1 Scavenging Ooze -2 Priest of Forgotten Gods -1 Fatal Push

+3 Village Rites +1 Zulaport Cutthroat +3 Unearth

Comment on some of these changes: Priest of Forgotten Gods: This card has been great, it has gotten me out of a lot of sticky situations. The card draw, drain, edict, and mana production stapled on this sac outlet makes it an explosive card that can help you grind into the late game. Unfortunately, as good as it has been, the card is clunky, and is the first removed first in cases where it would be best. If you could play the card and then activate it immediately, then the card would definitely have a spot, but unfortunately summoning sickness makes this card too clunky, and its going to get tossed to the way side with cards like Cabal Therapist

Eldritch Evolution and Village Rites: I am experimenting with a mix of these spells. regardless, of which should be played, these one time use value sac spells definitely deserve slots in the deck. Lets compare the two. while Eldritch Evolution is a great toolbox card and gets what will most likely be the most valuable creature for a situation. It is a card that makes your 1 of creatures, almost like a 5 of if you're playing 4, so it is a really good card to dig for when trying to find answers. That being said, the card is 3 mana, and is often your only play for the turn, leaving you without being able to play other spells, also noteworthy, you can't get retribution of the ancients with it, which I'm finding is at times much better than getting yawgmoth. now for Village Rites, this new card from M21 is the best version of the spell to date, going from completely a unplayable card like , to something that may just be worth it. Being 1 mana, it is a way that you can generate +1/+1 counters on your undying creatures, and churn through the deck for more creatures as well as answers such as cards like Retribution of the Ancients and answers. Being instant speed also does a lot for the deck, you can hold up mana for retribution and play a reactive strategy when needed, you could also use it to sac creatures that would die anyways for value, or save an undying creature from path. With all of this said, I think that these cards both benefit the deck in a unique way, and that some split sounds correct, so for now I will be opting for the 3, 2 split between rites, and evolution.

Unearth: this is a card that I have been avoiding for a little bit. Unearth is a card that is just an amazing card for a lot of decks, but being a card that functions from the graveyard, I have avoided in an effort to not rely on it too much. That being said, this deck has cards that play different key roles in order to operate at its best, and in the event that one of these pieces are removed, having a way to efficiently bring them back makes this deck much more resilient.

Zulaport Cutthroat: This card was suggested, figured I'd try it. haven't liked the idea of playing this card too much because it is just a 1/1, which is not that favorable in an aggro deck, but I tend to have trouble with aggressive decks like burn, so the life gain is nice. also having some extra reach with a sac outlet seems good for getting that last bit of damage through as well.

So there it is, thats it for my first deck update, let me know what you think!

Nice deck!

This looks pretty similar to a regular Yawgmoth, Thran Physician combo deck.

Maybe add some Blood Artists or some Zulaport Cutthroats, and maybe even Chord of Calling or Finale of Devastation?

Hey, thanks for the feedback. while these decks are very similar, This deck tries to leverage Retribution of the Ancients with undying creatures and sac outlets. Because of this, these decks have a few key differences:

  • This deck tries to get more value from undying creatures, so much so that it plays other sac outlets. This gives the deck more mobility as an aggro deck than GB Yawgmoth.

  • Yawgmoth you can see plays more mana dorks because it has the space, and it allows the deck to play cards like Chord of Calling and Finale of Devastation. This approach may be better because it lets the deck effectively have more undying creatures in addition to finding the combo/silver bullet cards, but it is slower than this deck. Because this deck does not run mana dorks like GB Yawgmoth, tutors do not make much sense because you cannot find say your Yawgmoth until you draw 6 or 7 lands.

  • This deck is not a combo deck first. Value from Retribution of the Ancients is often overlooked.

In short, GB Yawgmoth is more of a combo value deck with the ability to be a toolbox deck while this deck is more of an aggro tempo style deck with the ability to combo. While GB Yawgmoth is centered around getting value with Yawgmoth, this deck is focused on attacking always having a good board state. Just because the decks have similar cards and can do similar things, they are just different decks in the end.

Thanks for the feedback, its greatly appreciated!
