Question on Mutavault (and other creature lands)
Asked by Animamundi 9 years ago
Apologies if this isn't the correct place to post this.
Looking at the rules, it would seem that a card such as Mutavault if played as a creature it can be destroyed in the same way and sent to the graveyard while in this creature and land state.
My question is if it is sent to the graveyard can it be resurrected in the same way a creature would be, as technically it is still both a land and a creature?
You dont play it as a creature.
You play the card as a land.
You activate the ability and it becomes a land AND a creature.
At the end of turn it becomes just a land again.
When it is a creature it can be destroyed by anything that would destroy a creature.
If it is in the graveyard it can only be reanimated by cards that reanimate lands because in the graveyard it is only ever a land. Activated abilities that affect a specific card dont stay activated once that card dies.
Also - rules should be asked in the Q&A section.

To be more precise, whenever an object changes zones, it becomes a new object with no memory of it's previous existance. There are several exceptions, none of which applies to this case. Therefore, Mutavault will be a creature long enough to trigger abilities which trigger upon a creature dieing (because on it's way from the battlefield to the graveyard, it's still a creature), but as soon as it's actually in the graveyard, it'll be a new object, which normally is exactly what's printed on the card.

Yes and no. Once it's in the graveyard, it ceases to be a creature because it's considered a new object which will be only a land called Mutavault. It will not be a legal target for Dread Return, Rescue from the Underworld and similar.
However, there are certain cards that trigger from creatures dying, and an animated land will trigger such abilities as it is a creature while dying. If you have Nim Deathmantle in play, you may use its triggered ability to return Mutavault to play because it only cares that it was a creature at the moment of dying. Similar to Saffi Eriksdotter, she only cares that it's a creature at the time of dying.

Thank you to everyone for the rapid and clear responses, that makes sense that once it moves to the graveyard it 'resets' and it only considered as a land card. I will use these in conjunction with a few Nyx Weaver cards, which allow the return of any card from the graveyard. :)

Mutavault ceases to be a creature once it hits the graveyard even if it dies because I kill it with Doom Blade.
A card in a graveyard, unless otherwise stated, cannot use it's abilities in the graveyard. Because Mutavault ceases to be a creature once it dies and cannot activate it's abilities once it's in the graveyard, you cannot bring it back with something like Reanimate, Dance of the Dead, or Unburial Rites.
I don't know the specific rulings for Mutavault ceasing to be a creature once it dies but I believe it has something to do with the fact that the Mutavault on the field and the Mutavault in the graveyard are not the same "instance" despite them being the same card. Similar to how if I exile your Leonin Arbiter with Oblivion Ring the Arbiter won't be the same "instance" of the card if it comes back when O-Ring goes away because it changed zones.
