How do creatures enter the battlefield with Living Death
Asked by Remyth 11 years ago
So, my question is, when to multiple creatures enter the battlefield when a Living Death is cast. Do they all enter at the same time? If so, how would that effect triggers on, say, Soul Warden or Prime Speaker Zegana ? Thanks!
Thanks. I'm not clear on the stack, would you mind explaining a little more why Soul Warden works but Prime Speaker Zegana wouldn't? Thanks!

sure, so what happens is all the creatures enter, and then all abilities that are triggered are put onto the stack, in APNAP order (active player puts their's on in any order, then the next player does the same) Prime Speaker enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters, which is not a triggered ability (works kind of like Clone 's ability), and X is zero cause there are no creatures when she enters, however, soul warnen has an ability that triggers whenever another creature enters the battlefield, which does work when it enters simultaneously with other creatures. You still do get to draw one card with prime speaker.
Hope that helps, I know it's not the easiest to follow

OK, so Craterhoof Behemoth and Disciple of Bolas would both work though, right?

yes, their abilities look at stuff as the resolve, so they would work, especially craterhoof, assuming you had some way to give everything haste (sac Anger to the Disciple of Bolas ?)

The key thing here is that triggered abilities (always start with "when / whenever / at") trigger right after the triggering event happens. Replacement effects (usually have "with / instead / prevent / as" somewhere in the text) are put into place right before the event they're replacing would happen, and they end up happening at the same time as the original event would have.
Soul Warden has a triggered ability, so it triggers right after everyone enters the battlefield from Living Death . You gain a bunch of life.
Prime Speaker Zegana has a replacement effect that replaces the event "enters the battlefield" with "enters the battlefield with some extra +1/+1 counters". You have to start dealing with it right before she actually enters the battlefield from Living Death , and at that time there are still no creatures on the battlefield yet. She doesn't get any +1/+1 counters.

@smash10101: Actually, I was going in a little different direction: When You Reanimate, Use 5 Colors .
Thanks, Rhadamanthus.

looks awesome, creatorhoof + flayer + living death = win, that is one amazing combo.

Side note: effects like Yeva's Forcemage or Angel of Jubilation would boost Zegana and you'd be able to draw more cards from her. Just stack zegana's drawing ability at the bottom, and once everything else on top of it resolves, Zegana will be buffed from whatever you brought in or already have (Cathars' Crusade comes to mind), then her ability will draw you tons of cards.

Goody: That is partially why I have Disciple of Bolas there. I sac Zegana to it, then it comes back with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed 's undying.

undying will also allow the creatures you sac to living death to come back after the ones from your graveyard do, causing a second wave of flaying

haha, indeed. I'm loving this deck and all of its quirkiness!

I'm coming in late on this threat... but if I understand this whole thing right then it means that if living death was resolved when Master Biomancer and Prime Speaker Zegana were in the graveyard then Zegana would come in with 2 +1/+1 counters and I would get to draw three cards?

No. Like I explained in my answer, a replacement effect that modifies how a creature enters the battlefield has to be dealt with before it actually enters the battlefield. As Prime Speaker Zegana is entering the battlefield, Master Biomancer isn't on the battlefield yet, so his ability doesn't exist. Zegana won't get any counters.

Thanks! Somehow I had it in my mind that Biomancer's oracle had the "when" keyword in it. Wishful thinking...

Note: flayer doesn't work with living death. Creatures enter from exile, not from graveyard

If there is one creature on my side of the field and I play Rise of the Dark Realms with prime speaker and craterhoof both in the grave, how would the abilities resolve?

Because Prime Speaker Zegana 's ability modifies how she enters the battlefield, it has to be processed before anything actually enters the battlefield. She'll only count the one creature you already have.
Craterhoof Behemoth 's ability is a triggered ability that triggers when it enters the battlefield. That means it triggers after everything is already on the battlefield, and it will count all of those creatures (and give all of them the bonus).
In the future, you'll have much better luck posting a new thread for a question rather than digging up an old one to post in. Only the people who posted in the old thread and didn't Unsubscribe to it will be able to know you posted if you do it that way.

Prime speaker wouldn't work because triggers all go on the stack after the creatures are all put into play, but I think Soul Warden would work, though i'd like a second opinion or time to read the relevant rules
