Decks dedicated to damaging yourself for value.

Are you looking for ideas, or just making a list? Any format preference?

Rowan, Scion of War is one of my favorite decks to play.

My favorite card for this is Trespasser's Curse. When you cast this on yourself, you get both the damage to self trigger and the lifegain trigger. You need to have creatures enter to get it, but it’s super fun.

If you’re in green you can go for Wanderlust types of effects as well. Feedback in blue, Ancient Runes in red. Binding Agony works for creatures as well, if you have blockers that you want your opponents to avoid crashing into, for fear of whatever self-damage upsides you’ve got on tap. Look at aggressive cards like this that would normally target an opponent’s creature or opponent and consider using it on yourself. Risky, but a lot of potential.

If you want a big one time discount maybe Price of Progress? Obviously you'd need to run it with lots of non-Basics yourself, but as an added upside it's a single spell that can end games for only 1R. If you have some evasive attackers like Dauthi Voidwalker you can try Hatred, this can kill a problem player and net an epic discount (so you can win via an X spell).

Technically you could try stuff like Ad Nauseam and Peer into the Abyss to both lose a ton of life and draw a ton of cards right away, so you can maximize the ability. I could be wrong, but I feel like most 'life for cards' stuff is good with Rowan, so if Naus or Peer is too good maybe Parker Luck or Keen Duelist type stuff will give a more relevant discount?

I'm trying to make a new hub entirely, likely rooted in commander. self damage is an actual archetype, and it's decently enjoyable, too.

Definitely not sure what format you are looking for but Death's Shadow and life swapping strategies are some of the more common examples for what you are looking for.

Brorca are there any updates on this? Was I off the mark in my recommendations? I’m interested in seeing how things are going on this deck, if it’s still something you’re working on…

FormOverFunction not at the moment, but feel free to give more recommendations! Vilis, Broker of Blood is a fun self damage commander.

Nice! Bond of Agony might be useful, if you’ve got the life to spend.
