It's confirmed! Sarkhan's homeworld for the fall set! Of course, you're all watching the announcement right now. Thoughts?

spyroswiz says... #2

Maybe fetchlands are coming back as the last words of Mark Rosewater.

May 18, 2014 2:14 p.m.

Chubbub says... #3

What do u guys think is being brought back in the Fall? MaRo said he was bringing something new back,

May 18, 2014 2:15 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #4

Ah I am so looking forward to that!!!!! :D

May 18, 2014 2:15 p.m.

Unforgivn_II says... #5

Well, you can't really have Sarkhan without Nicol Bolas, so I would suspect NB to be back in some form

May 18, 2014 2:16 p.m.

zandl says... #6

"MaRo said he was bringing something new back,"

... Wait. What?

May 18, 2014 2:17 p.m.

miracleHat says... #7

I thought that sarkhan was alara. Sarkhan Vol , yeah, that is alara!

May 18, 2014 2:17 p.m.

KrosanTusker says... #8

I'm hoping he meant fetch lands, but who knows? I'm pumped for this block either way!

May 18, 2014 2:17 p.m.

KrosanTusker says... #9

Sarkhan was on Alara but it wasn't his home plane.

May 18, 2014 2:18 p.m.

zandl says... #10

Your statement is confusing; what did you mean?

You can't bring back something that's new.

May 18, 2014 2:22 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #11

He doesn't mean fetchlands. It's been said over and over and over that it won't be fetchlands by MaRo.

I think it'll be flanking. I would LOVE flanking.

May 18, 2014 2:23 p.m.

KrosanTusker says... #12

Flanking is cool, agreed.

May 18, 2014 2:25 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #13

Flanking would definitely be something awesome to reintroduce! I for one never got to play when Flanking was around and would love to see it in action :)

May 18, 2014 2:28 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #14

zandl - I think it was stated there would be something old brought back AND something new.

May 18, 2014 2:28 p.m.

ryuzaki32667 says... #15

yea what ChiefBell said, they are things that he said have been asked for. what have we been asking for other than the fetches...

May 18, 2014 2:32 p.m.

shocked439 says... #16

Both things are things the community has been begging for.

It's not crazy to think it's some firm of dual lands (fetch or filter) and riggers is it?

May 18, 2014 2:32 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #17

Could be pain lands like Caves of Koilos , could be filterlands like Fire-Lit Thicket . It won't be fetches because we've been told it won't be.

Personally I think they're referring to a popular mechanic (hence why I said 'flanking') rather than an actual card type like 'land'

May 18, 2014 2:35 p.m.

zandl says... #18

The filter lands are used in Modern and do carry a pretty hefty price tag. That was reason alone to reprint the shock lands and it would give us a dual-land that enters untapped.

May 18, 2014 2:38 p.m.

erabel says... #19

(looking through future-shifted cards, in case one fits flavorful-wise)

Perchance Emblem of the Warmind ? I'd like a cycle like that.

May 18, 2014 2:40 p.m.

zandl says... #20

Well, hopefully it's something playable instead.

May 18, 2014 2:41 p.m.

Thebigshaggy says... #21

If he said he's bringing something new back maybe it's something from Future Sight that was only printed very sparingly.

May 18, 2014 2:42 p.m.

KrosanTusker says... #22

I like that idea, Thebigshaggy. Just like him to be cryptic.

May 18, 2014 2:45 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #23

Here's the interview:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpXwpmm8GXQ&app=desktop

He specifically says he's bringing somethign we've been asking for back, and something completely new that we've never seen before. Saying they're bringing something 'new back' was a typo

May 18, 2014 2:47 p.m.

smash10101 says... #24

I would love to see the Nimbus Maze lands printed. I love that mechanic and it seems balanced enough that it could see standard printing. Also, flanking would be cool.

May 18, 2014 2:49 p.m.

maxon says... #25

If there is a Wrath of God but with the name Wrath of Khan instead, I'd be very much amused.

May 18, 2014 3:02 p.m.

megawurmple says... #26

"If you enjoyed Innistrad or Theros" is a strange example. I loved Innistrad, didn't really like Theros. I now have no idea what to expect in terms of quality in this next set. Here's hoping it's another Innistrad.

On a completely related note, I'm surprised that this is the theme for the set. When Wizards trademarked the name a while ago, I (and many others) thought it was more likely to be for D&D rather than Magic. I'm interested to see what the flavour will be like.

May 18, 2014 3:16 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #27

It's pretty much mongolia. I judged this from the clothing that the characters are wearing (furs and leather), coupled with the cold looking environment (like other central / northern asian territories) and the emphasis on horses (presented by the background). The mongols are very famous for their horsemanship, along with their (what is perceived to be) crude and barbaric culture.

May 18, 2014 3:19 p.m.

Please let the old mechanic be Horsemanship. Come on, Sun Quan, Lord of Wu !

May 18, 2014 3:23 p.m.

miracleHat says... #29

So, the homeworld is dragons right? Or at least, there used to be dragons. if i remember scourge correctly, that was a dragon set. I wouldn't be surprised if they brought back storm/cycling.

May 18, 2014 3:26 p.m.

Servo_Token says... #30

I still want snow permanents.

May 18, 2014 3:32 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #31

Personally, this just solidifies the fact that it's a Mongol world.

  1. "War-torn world ruled by warlords."

  2. The armor worn in the promo picture looks similar to Mongol armor I've seen in history books.

  3. Khan- A sovereign or military ruler, first widely used by nomadic Mongol tribes.

  4. Tarkir seems like a similar word to the Tatar/Tartar rulers of the Golden Horde splinter empire of the Mongolian Empire.

And if it's a Mongolian set, I think ChiefBell hit the nail on the head with flanking coming back. What were the Mongols experts at besides conquering? Riding horses. Their greatest victories came from their ability to move swiftly on their horses. They were easily able to outflank their enemies.

And that's your history lesson for today, folks.

Yes! A large-small-large set! My prayers have been answered! Now back to Zendikar, R&D! On the downside, there aren't any dragons on the plane... Sucks. I like dragons.

May 18, 2014 3:33 p.m.

What about something like boldwyr intimidator. Does that seem like it could be in the set?

May 18, 2014 3:35 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #33

Boldwyr intimidator is seeing a reprint in the Conspiracy set!

May 18, 2014 3:36 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #34

Yeah I think it's going to contain horsemanship or flanking. Either one will be awesome for the players of Magic! :D

May 18, 2014 3:50 p.m.

00xtremeninja says... #35

I would be all for some horsemanship and flanking again.

wonder if most of these creatures will be able to be blocked by walls.

May 18, 2014 3:50 p.m.

Something new we wanted to come back: Full art land (http://www.gatheringmagic.com/news-05-18-2014-khans-of-tarkir-is-the-fall-2014-set-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=news-05-18-2014-khans-of-tarkir-is-the-fall-2014-set-2)

Something we want that they haven't done: wedge block (BUG,RUG,RUW,GBW,RBW)

May 18, 2014 4:10 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #37

The full art lands are judge rewards.

May 18, 2014 4:12 p.m.

megawurmple says... #38

samuraisenpai1 Maybe the full art lands are because of a new "land matters" block akin to Zendikar (it already has the same block structure, why not the same theme?), which may bring fetch lands with it. Here's hoping.

May 18, 2014 4:14 p.m.

tooTimid says... #39

Set seems cool! "If you liked Innistrad" brings new hope!

May 18, 2014 4:23 p.m.

KrosanTusker says... #40

Pretty sure horsemanship -- a more parasitic version of flying -- will not return here.

May 18, 2014 4:26 p.m.

gnarlicide says... #41

Haha... Tarmogoyf was future shifted... Lol. That would be the day.

May 18, 2014 4:38 p.m.

TexasDice says... #42

@Unforgivn_II: Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker is perfect. There is no need for another version down, I won't allow it!

May 18, 2014 4:38 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #43

The idea of this fall set being the enemy wedge block would certainly get me playing standard again

May 18, 2014 4:40 p.m.

codebread says... #44

I don't think now would be a good time to make a wedge block. Theros block tried to emphasize a mono-color playstyle and we've already got a multicolor block rotating out. The scrylands would be pretty inefficient for tricolor decks depending on what new dual lands we get. I also worry about the reprinting of filterlands. If filterlands and scrylands are in the same standard season, there will be no lands in standard that can filter turn one. In which case, I hope they print something to the liking of Birds of Paradise .

May 18, 2014 5:17 p.m.

Unforgivn_II says... #45

TexasDice - you dare blaspheme against Nicol Bolas ?

May 18, 2014 5:43 p.m.

blackmarker90 says... #46

You guys do realize that MaRo has to say no until they are given the ok to release information about the set, in reference to the fetches.

May 18, 2014 5:48 p.m.

I'm really excited! Sarkhan is my homie, I hope he brings them dragons back to Tarkir. Also, how about a card that takes after the infamous Mongolian death worm?

May 18, 2014 5:50 p.m.

-Fulcrum says... #48

Announcing Khans of Tarkir

At 0:34, we see what looks like a mountain in the shape of a dragon's skull. I know a lot of people want fetches back, but I'm thinking from that it'll be Dragonskull Summit and the other checklands.

May 18, 2014 6:15 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #49

That is a dragon's head yes. But Sarkhan is notorious for dragons, so I doubt there would be Dragonskull Summit , rather I believe he will bring back dragons.

May 18, 2014 6:18 p.m.

Kootaroo says... #50

-.- I was already slowly slipping out of standard from Theros. I only started playing Magic since Core set 2013 but I am already disliking standard. It seems like to me that Standard has been further and further away from the things I like about it since RTR.

I am not a fan of dragons. Hearing about this next plane being Sarkhan's home made me cringe. I have read on the official spoiler that this plane no dragons exists. If it is to stay that way i would be happy but i have a feeling that it wont. I have never liked dragons.

Looks like wizards is going to effectively push me out of standard completely with this block.
