Negate or Dispel

Modern Deck Help forum

Hey guys,

I'm back again... asking for help with the same deck... because every time I ask I get like... 1 comment.

So I've got a more specific question for sideboard help -

Counter tech to protect my combo in this deck:

Izzet Painful?

I'm having a hard time choosing between the pure protection focus of Dispel or the offer of versatility behind Negate.

I've already got Pact of Negation in the side so this is just extra safety. Any tips or suggestions you guys have as far as protecting my combo against competitive meta would be greatly appreciated!

All things considered, is all too worth it (in my opinion). Dispel is sneaky as hell but Negate is so versatile that unless you're convinced the only threats are instant speed (very well could be), I'd go with the Negate.

Let me put it this way -- there are times I've regretted Dispel; there are far, far fewer times I've regretted playing Negate.

I would just run Mana Leak over both of those cards

Mana Leak is only good early-game, I use Negate for versatility.

Mana Leak is kind of bad...Dispel will take care of what you need too most of the time. I prefer it to Negate for two reasons. Both hinge on it costing only .

1: It costs only .

2: The fact that you only have to leave one mana up gives you an advantage. Opponents are much more likely to tap out to cast a threat, or attempt to stop you if you only have one mana showing, it has a sneaky factor. It really only works once against any given opponent, but it never hurts to have tricks up your sleeve.

To be clear, Negate is a more versatile counter spell...but I prefer Dispel for the reasons above

It honestly depends. Negate is way more versatile because it can get planes walkers as well as cards like Mindslaver and is quite easy to cast at only 2 mana but I have to admit, Dispel is sneaky as hell and very good against control.

Mana Leak is great. If you don't like it, too bad. It is good at most stages of the game and only gets bad when your opponent has more than 8 lands.

Mana Leak, because creatures matter in this format..

I mean, if you're going to use Dispel for being a one mana counter, why not just use Swan Song instead? Much more versatile, and the 2/2 is rarely a problem.

With 2 Izzet Charm main board. Dispel is what I'd pick

I'd go with swan song if your a combo deck, or possibly spell pierce. One mana counters are great and very inconspicuous especially if your only untapped land is a fetch.

Swan Song is actually a fantastic suggestion. Thank you very much Sloanan.

And thank you to the rest of you for all your thoughts and suggestions. I have come to the strong idea, with the help of ToolmasterOfBrainerd that it would be wise to run 1 or 2 of each. This would allow me the opportunity to use Gifts Ungiven in a fringe circumstance to grab all three counter spells and ensure combo victory.

Swan Song can help me stop enchantments that shut off my combo as well, like Suppression Field and Rest in Peace.

Thank you for the suggestions everybody. If you haven't yet, please check out my deck and upvote it if you deem it worthy. I look forward to building it and playing it.

-crosses fingers they don't ban Goryo's Vengeance in the next year-
