Why Exactly is this banned?
Commander (EDH) forum

If this is in the wrong forum I apologize. As it wasn't rules or deck building it seemed the most appropriate.
So what I'm asking about is Panoptic Mirror. I get that it's REALLY good. But ban worthy? There arenso many things that blow up artifacts that I just don't fully understand why this is banned. I get that Tooth and Nail at upkeep every turn is nuts but Staff of Domination is way more abusable in my opinion as it can used in response to "blow that up" where as panoptic mirror just blows up.
Thoughts please?
Thank you and may you never be mana screwed

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with Time Warp and similar effects that could quite possibly lock every other player out of the game.

As the other 2 have said, Time Walk effects with it will lock everyone else out of the game if they do not have an instant speed answer to it.

The other thing is, the spell is cast for free, you only pay the cost on imprint. All of the Time Walkesque spells have been mentioned, probably being the most abuseable, but there are also so many other spells that can be unfair as well. For example Worst Fears + Paradox Haze for example permanantly locks 2 players out of the game for only the initial cost of the 8 and no recurring cost.
Basically, "Panoptic Mirror goes against the spirit of the game" I think is the jist of it.

I have to disagree on the staff being more able to be abused. Like previous posters have said it turns commander games into a let's watch 1 person play game. Going infinite mana with creatures and the staff is a lot more fun and challenging to deal with than the mirror, while still not being broken because of its slowness and vulnerability. The staff requires multiple cards in play, the mirror just requires the mirror in play and that is it.

Panoptic Mirror is banned because you can recast spells for free. You muster up the mana one time and then you can cast that spell every turn for free. Like they said the extra turn ones would be the worst, cause I mean, you just get an upkeep forever, and you basically win. Even outside of that having a free spell every turn is crazy. Plus its colorless, so every deck would run it, which usually overplayed things get banned if it is oppressive to the format, which that would be.
Staff of Domination is actually one of those things that is really good, but not broken. You have to go really out of your way to get it to an unfair point, and really at that point I'd say you earned it.

Extra turns are probably the worst but i first realized how bad it was when my brother added it without knowing it was banned. Hero's downfall every upkeep is painful, i can only imagine how much worse it can be

Even if you're not using very abusive spells like Time Walk or Cruel Ultimatum, just the ability to cast any basic spell you're running like in a monoblack deck: Hero's Downfall or Diabolic Tutor or Thoughtseize every single turn is crazy.
Plus the fact which a lot of people don't notice is that you can imprint a new card every turn, and then you get options during your upkeep. It doesn't just cast the last imprinted spell, you get to choose from all of them...

If something is part of a broken combo which every deck could play, and would be improved by playing, it will be banned.

i don't really know, but maybe infinite turns via a "get extra turn" spell ?
