Anafenza or Juniper Order Ranger?

Commander Deck Help forum

I am currently constructing an EDH deck with Atraxa, Praetors' Voice as the general, and that deck contains a copy of Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit, for her very useful ability. However, it was not until after I added her to the deck that I became aware of the existence of Juniper Order Ranger, which is superior to her in nearly every way, except that it has a far higher mana cost, and I am loath to exchange Anafenza for the ranger, because I wish to keep the mana curve of my deck as low as possible.

What does everyone else say about this situation? Should I replace Anafenza with the ranger, or leave her in my deck?

Depends on the application and whether or not your curve supports it. A deck link would help.

A link to a deck list would def help because its situational. But generally, Juniper doesn't really do much better if you don't run tokens.

Between Gyre Sage, Astral Cornucopia, and Everflowing Chalice, this deck has more than sufficient mana generation capability, so casting the ranger should not be a problem.

User:DemonDragonJ: 3 ramp cards is nothing, sorry to say.

Honestly, I would prefer Mikaeus, the Lunarch over either of the two, as he doesn't need to see the creature enter the battlefield to put a +1/+1 counter on it.

I have consulted EDHREC.com, which has proven to be a very useful resource for constructing EDH decks, and it lists the ranger as a "signature card" for Atraxa, so, with that in mind, I have decided the the advantages of the ranger far outweigh its disadvantages.

However, enpc, your mention of Mikaeus now has me wondering about which card may be better, so I shall now start a thread to ask whether I should choose him or the ranger.

enpc, I actually realized how I can avoid needing to choose between those cards and have both in my deck: I shall replace Anafenza with the ranger, as I originally planned, and then use Mikaeus to replace Echoes of the Kin Tree, as that card is merely a lesser version of him.
