Couple More Card Changes —Jan. 20, 2017

I've been playing this deck a lot, whether it be at FNM, in my playgroup, or even at GP side events. In such, I've identified a few cards I think aren't pulling their weight and replacing them. It is notable that most the cards removed made "land creatures". As much as I love them, they're just performing too slowly for my liking.

Embodiment of Insight -> Acidic Slime. This is one of those land creature creators. I figured I needed more removal, and Acidic Slime is the first one to come to mind. It's versatile and fits curve pretty well.

Embodiment of Fury -> Grove Rumbler. Honestly this one isn't much of an upgrade, if any at all. Grove Rumbler is just another big and stompy landfall oriented creature. Difference is I don't have to leave things untapped for this one to get its value.

Liege of the Tangle -> Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger. I love Liege of the Tangle, I really do. But waiting a turn to attack with it, hoping it connects, then waiting another turn to use the land creatures was just annoying. By the time it got its payout, it and/or all my lands would be destroyed and I'd have invested too much into this one strategy. Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger is the same mana cost and also isn't too effective at throwing the game our way, but what I like about him is that he punishes opponents who try to deal with it or anything I keep doing while he's out. He just makes things run smoother for me.

Boundless Realms -> Animist's Awakening. I've never been too fond of Animist's Awakening, but frankly I feel it's better here. Sure, Boundless Realms does its job by grabbing a bunch of lands on a turn when I'm gonna be swinging big. But the problem is by the time I'm ready to use it, most my basics have been fetched already, so I'm only grabbing like 5 and passing up a bunch of non-basics. Meanwhile, if I roll the dice on Animist's Awakening, in some cases I get more value, in some the same, and in some a bit less. The main upside to Animist's Awakening is that I can use it earlier in the game if I'm caught in a pinch. I'm never at a place with 7 mana thinking I need to ramp quickly. At least with Animist's Awakening I can try to hit another land or two.

We'll see how the deck keeps evolving as I play it more. No changes are ever final.
