Minor changes to deck —June 14, 2019

Recently I played some NICE games with my gurl Aminatou, the Fateshifter again and I realized two things:

  • Aside from the mana rocks and Altar of the Brood, I don't have any permanents that Sun Titan can bring me back, so I swapped the guy out for Restoration Angel.

  • Several people told me this before but now I experienced it myself: Azor, the Lawbringer sounds way better on paper then it performs at the table. I got him out 3 games in a row and he made no difference for the outcome at all. His On-Attack-Trigger is quite expensive and while his ETB effect is effectively blocking sorcery- speed boardwipes, he can still be removed on my turn without issue. Overall the card doesn't impact the game as a whole too much, so I swapped him out for Stonehorn Dignitary which can save me from getting focussed by the occasional aggro player :)

I've been playing Animatou for about 4 months now. Good build. A little Vanilla (every Animatou deck looks like this at some point). Unless your meta is casual I'd suggest dropping the CMC and losing some of the ways to combo off (Peregrine Drake, Deadeye Nav) in favour of finding cheap ways to tutor your Altar Trinket Mage and protect the combo Silence . I'd also lose Azor (who appears great but is not that good in practice) in favour of Stonehorn Dignitary who provides protection from combat.

Thx for the advice carlmoores! I recently started to notice the high average CMC among my creatures, it`s getting harder to build to a good board state and I can't do much on lets say turn 1 - 5. I am still testing Azor, the Lawbringer . My playgroup doesn't run aggro decks (I have a Edgar Markov Vampire Tribal Deck which is played rarely), we will see how it's performing.

They will be difficult cuts for sure, they were for me. I hated to lose cards like Perplexing Chimera , Magister Sphinx and Yennett, but the deck runs more smoothly and enjoyable with lower casting cost and more efficient cards in their place. I'm also a long way from done playtesting and tuning but, for me, using the ETB guys as board control and card advantage only and devoting the more superflous guys slots to cards to hunt out and protect my end game makes the deck much more enjoyable on the whole (it's worth noting I have 4 different metas and 3 of them are pretty cut throat. Games raraely go beyond turn 7 or 8)
