Goblin Kites

Enchantment

(Red): Target creature you control with toughness 2 or less gains flying until end of turn. Flip a coin at end of turn. If you lose the flip, sacrifice that creature.

Goblin Kites can bump your attackers into the air, as it looks like you won’t be adding to their toughness. Betrothed of Fire is one of my favorite sacrifice enchantments in red, though I’m not sure if it will fit in here. Black can give you a fair number of cracks at a creature with spells like Fake Your Own Death, some of which even buff the creatures power. Nightmare Shepherd could also give you another round of attacks for each creature. Now that I think about it, the degenerating zombies from that recent set might be a good option too, since they weren’t long for this world anyways. That would put Ghoulish Procession towards the top of my list too... lots to think about!

I absolutely adore the self-destruct downside that goblins so often had back then. Goblin Kites was another stellar example. So wonderful.

FormOverFunction on Good Card Design

Some of my favorite cards are ones that have equal parts theme, balance, and utility. Stone Giant is the first example I can think of right now; giving a creature PERILOUS flight (as long as it isn’t too big!) is a great effect, it ends up costing you a creature, and the thought of a giant throwing a goblin at something is extremely enjoyable. Goblin Kites is another great example of this. I understand, and appreciate, the idea of value... but there seem to be more and more creatures that have an extra point of power or toughness, or even something like “sacrifice this creature to draw/create a treasure,” added just to make the card more valuable. It seems, often, like a change made after the fact... just sort of tacked on after some play testing or whatever. That’s what usually bumps a high-value card down on my list. At the completely opposite end of the spectrum, I also love cards that have so little theme/reasoning that they BECOME cool. Examples of this would be Ankh of Mishra or Copper Tablet. How do they work? What do they do? No one knows, because they’re mysterious ancient artifacts that you don’t want to mess with. Those apply equally to all players, so they still meet the “balance” requirement for me. I guess I’m okay with balanced OR themely, now that I think about it. :P

I too love goblins and always recommend (at least considering) Heat Stroke, since your goblins generally aren’t going to make it home anyways. I’ve had that in all of my goblin decks since it arrived in the 90s. Goblin Kites pairs well with it to too, as they don’t end up having to worry about sticking the landing. Just be careful of their toughness - a Goblin Caves will shut down your kites.

Great job!

RoarMaster on Does Goblin Kites ability create …

So the wording on Goblin Kites is a little different than I am used to.

Normally when a Delayed Trigger is worded, it is one with the normal Triggered Ability words, "When", "Whenever", or "At". But in Goblin Kites case it does not, making me wonder if it actually is?

If it is not a delayed trigger ability, does it still have to be in play in order to be put on the stack at the end of the turn?

Theoretically Im thinking that you could pay (R) any number of times, targeting the same creature, and then at end of turn, they all would trigger(assuming it is a delayed trigger) and resolve, alowing you to flip that many coins, regardless if the target or Kites were still in play...? Or does the targeted creature still need to be in play in order for the coin flip ability to go on the stack?

Im trying to decide if its worth running in Zndrsplt

ah. a goblin war party commander style. as a fellow goblin lover here are a few suggestions for you.

Goblin War Drums: gives attacking creatures Menace which makes them harder to block.

Berserkers' Onslaught: gives attacking creatures Double Strike for double the pain (and fun)

Raging Goblin: having the first attack always helps.

Goblin Chariot: same reason.

War Horn: nothing wrong with an extra +1/+0 when attacking.

Goblin Chirurgeon: wouldn't want to lose your best creatures so quickly so save them by sacking another creature to regenerate them.

Goblin Kites: they can fly! they can fly! they can fly! oh wait.....no they can't.
