Instead of monopolizing people’s time with a 15 minute manifesto of a read like I often do, I’ll keep this brief. Potentially unpopular opinion: This game started as a Swords’n’Sorcery affair, and that’s the only ‘universe’ I would like it to occupy.

Race cars (Aetherdrift)? Cowboys (Thunder Junction)? Spaceships and aliens (Universes Beyond)? Walk ons by unrelated movies and television shows (Walking Dead, Doctor Who etc)? None of that is the game I grew up with. It’s like an unfortunate twist on the famous Reese’s Peanut Butter commercial—Hey! You got your unrelated themes and tropes that don’t fit with the game’s original design intent in my Swords’n’Sorcery card game!

Of course, everyone’s a hypocrite to some extent. I make allowance for the Innistrad sets focused on zombies, Hollywood-adjacent monsters and eldritch horrors, and my only attempt at justification is that both are already associated with the Swords’n’Sorcery subgenre. Magi steeped in necromancy and sorcery is a recurring plot device in many Robert E. Howard stories, and he wove in a few eldritch abominations as an ode to fellow writer H.P. Lovecraft as well. There’s an established literary connection in addition to in-game throwbacks (Zombie Master, Frankenstein’s Monster, Cosmic Horror etc), and that’s enough for me.

As for the rest? It’s not the game I grew up with, and it isn’t anything I’m interested in.

FormOverFunction on Pattern Recognition #380 - Skulking …

[1.] I really enjoy your posts, thank you! [2.] As a sucker for theme and flavor and all that, I REALLY enjoy skulk. It hadn’t really occurred to me that it had something of a shortcoming until reading this. The value in skulk, I think, is more theme than hard-mechanics; it’s a perfect representation of the skittering, clicking, and gentle gnawing that NONE of us want to hear while we attempt to fall asleep. Startled Awake  Flip is one of my favorite cards in my Haunted House deck. It would be perfect if they hadn’t (I think) forced the artist to add a dagger to its art. The relentless dread of /knowing/ it’s coming back for you is chef’s kiss. I understand that there are other examples that may not have stand-alone value, but as someone who has complained (probably too much) about the more modern “everything bagel” sort of magic cards I try to remind myself that most magic cards really shouldn’t be a complete package. I’m always stuck in my own head-canon for these games, and I love the idea of some stale semi-litch wizard handing a vial of something awful to a snooping, lurking, maybe even… skulking… one-eyed thrull who is going to shamble-wriggle his way into the shining citadel belonging to the white-red, shiny-armored battle-wizard. Even though black and blue have some of the most Colossal Whales and Cosmic Horrors they really don’t (in my mind) match the same… cultural(?) levels of blazing dragons, moss-covered gargantuan beasts and ageless angels. I like the idea of black and blue reveling in their (relatively) under-powered owls and rats; especially when all of this universe is really just laid out for us, the wizards, to choose from as we prepare to compete with one another. I hope this doesn’t come across as combative, as I 100% understand where you’re coming from on this one. This was an outstanding opportunity, though, to attempt to drag you all through what goes on in my head while I’m playing.

Yeah, I love the art for Eater of the Dead. The older magic art is great, and there are some really creepy pieces that would fit right in, like the aptly named Cosmic Horror. It's basically a Shoggoth, and is a massive 7/7 Horror, but the upkeep cost is awful haha.

As for Altar of the Brood, I tried running it a while ago when this deck was originally helmed by Lazav, Dimir Mastermind, and it never did enough for me then. But you're right, the flavor/theme is on point. Can't be a good cultist without an altar haha. I'll revisit it again in this deck at some point. What do you think I should take out to put it in?

I got myself the absolutely busted Cosmic Horror from that brand new set Legends that just came out.

Cryptolith Fragment  Flip might be worthwhile as well. I’m a fan of the natural disasters... and I’m not very good at Magic: the Gathering... so I would probably try to force something like Cyclone or Pestilence in there LOL. Probably end up wedging something crazy in there like Cosmic Horror too, just to make sure no one would confuse the deck with all those eldrazi-doldrum decks. Your deck sounds fun! Let us know how it goes!!

There are some awesome classic cards that would be great for theme, too, like Cosmic Horror, Island Fish Jasconius, Stone Spirit, and Force of Nature.

The original Terror was great, but then they did a good job with the body/muscles/skeleton cycle art. Not sure how to link the specific ones, but they’re pretty great. Cosmic Horror was always a good time too.

A partner enchantment for this might be something like: “When a horror dies, create x eldrazi tokens, where x is the toughness of the horror.”

I would love more horror-tribal, to be completely honest. I feel like that we could have gotten a little more in the Innistrad sets. Anything to let me get Cosmic Horror back to the forefront ;p
