What would happen if I cloned a flip card?

Asked by whenshon 8 years ago

For example, if I were to play Phantasmal Image on Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip, and I activated it, triggering the flip ability, what would happen to my image? Would it be different for cards like Delver of Secrets  Flip because they don't exile themselves?

In general a spell or ability does as much as it can if not all actions can be taken. A Clone of a double faced card does not have a second face. It only has the properties of the face that was copied.

If you clone an Origins Flipwalker and meet their flip condition on the clone, you exile the clone and it re-enters as the card with the clone ability. In this case you would have a Phantasmal Image enter and could copy any creature that is on the battlefield as it enters.

If you clone a Delver of Secrets  Flip you will look at the top card of your library each of your upkeeps. You may reveal that card. If you reveal an instant or sorcery card you still will not transform clone delver because he does not have an Insectile Aberration face.

If you clone Howlpack Alpha and someone casts 2 or more spells you will not transform him because he does not have a Mayor of Avabruck  Flip face.

Oh and to answer the question in the title instead of the ones in the body Cloneing Budoka Gardener will give you an exact copy of him that will flip to Dokai, Weaver of Life once you have 10 lands out as the second half of the ability resolves. Kamigawa flip cards have all of the rules text on one face so they are not treated as DFC.

As was noted, flip cards are a different from double-faced cards, but the community's penchant for slang over accurate wording has since confused the two.

Similarly, there is no triggered ability here. Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip has a single, activated ability. That ability has a clause that causes you to transform the card if a certain condition is met during the resolution of the ability. It does not trigger another ability for the transformation process.
