Umbral mantle - elvish archdruid question

Asked by Darthack2661 6 years ago

Been out of magic for over 20 years, some of the new dynamics are a little wonky to me. If I use Umbral Mantle on an Archdruid, I know its a infinite G combo. My question is, with the +2/+2 the comes with it for each untap (also infinite?), and an "equip 0", can I transfer the mantle after blockers are declared? For example, I send a elf hoard, and I'd put the infinite buffed mantle on whomever gets through? Thanks for the help!

You would need a way to equip the mantle at instant speed, since equipping can only normally be done at sorcery speed

So there are a couple things to keep in mind for Umbral Mantle:

  1. Equipment: Equipments can only be equipped/re-equipped to creatures you control at sorcery speed (outside of Leonin Shikari). This means you are constrained to only be able to move the Umbral Mantle around during your main phases. Once you have moved into combat, you cannot re-equip the Umbral Mantle to a new creature.
  2. : This symbol means that "untapping" the creature is part of paying the COST for the ability of +2/+2. If the creature is tapped (due to being declared as attacking or if the creature has a ability like Elvish Archdruid), then if you can pay the , you can "untap" the creature and give it +2/+2. But then the creature needs to have some way of becoming "tapped" again! If it was Llanowar Elves, then np! But if it's Elvish Champion, then you are more restricted on how to get this creature "tapped" first.

you might as well just pump your entire board during your 1st main phase.

You got Brass Squire and Leonin Shikari for equipping at instant speed. Sigarda's Aid would let you play Umbral during combat or whatever, for example, but not move it around.

You also need a way to pay for the 3 mana Umbral needs to activate on top of a creature that taps. So like if you control 3 elves including Archdruid, he gives you enough to pay for Umbrals cost.

I think the question is whether the buff gets tracked with the creature or with the equipment, and thus would be able to be moved by moving the equipment. The answer is no, if you buff the Elvish Archdruid with Umbral Mantle you can't move the buff by moving the mantel.
