Multiplayer games, losing players permanents.

Asked by Pskytzo 6 years ago

In a 3+ player game when a player leaves the game what happens to permanents such as if another player took control of a creature or enchantments such as the player that left the game's Compulsory Rest.

Section 8 of the comprehensive rules covers multiplayer games, and rule 800.4a explains what happens when a player leaves the game.

Rule 800.4a Show

So if a player loses, all of his permanents immediately leave with him. The Compulsory Rest would disappear, leaving the creature free once again. Likewise, if the losing player had taken a creature without the use of a permanent (say via Bribery or Dominate) then the creature would return to its owner.

So if it's taken with a permanent or a creature with an ability?

Look at the first example... "Alex casts Mind Control on bianca's Assault Griffin... If Bianca leaves the game, so does assault griffin and mind control is put into Alex's graveyard."

Lmao nvm clockwork i get what you're saying now... I was asking because i was under the assumption all objects leave as the rules state as a player leaves. I lost one game and dude kept my Oketra the True I was like wtf, and then someone else had a spell similar to Compulsory Rest on one of my creatures and when he died my other opponent stated that the permanent stays.

An important reason the rule is like it is is so that if you lose (or concede) you can pick up all your cards and leave the table. If you get an emergency phone call you don't want to leave your Oketra the True with a group of strangers because you had a pickup game in a card store.

As for permanents you control when you leave, if they entered under someone else's control and you took them (with Dominate, Act of Aggression, or the like), they get returned to their previous controller. If they entered under your control (with Bribery, Beacon of Unrest, or the like), they get exiled. Either way they stay at the table so their owner can collect them when they leave the game.

First, all permanents owned by the player leaving the game gets removed from play.

Then all spells and abilities that were owned by that player are removed from the stack.

Following that all permanents the player controlled due to control changing effects have the control changing effect end (anything that says gain control of target ____) end, and go back to its last controller if they had one.

Then all other permanents that player controls are exiled. So permanents you got from another player that was not already a permanent in play (through Bribery, Acquire, Desertion, Beacon of Unrest, etc.)
