Few Words about My Pre-release

Limited forum

Hi guys, I'm gonna keep this short because there are lot of other pre-release reports and I don't even have time to write a thorough accounting of what happened.

I went to a small store with something over 20 attendants, so we had 5 rounds. I took Sultai, but opened a crap promo (Villainous Wealth ), and after inspecting the other boosters, I decided to ditch blue completely, fill with white and splash a bit of red removal. The final deck I played is below:

It performed very well. I ended up losing only one game in round 1, which concluded a tie between me and my opponent. All other rounds were 2-0. I won't go into individual card evaluation because the quality of most cards in my deck is pretty obvious (e.g. Crater's Claw, Siege Rhino ) and I've seen other threads discussing these. However, I want to talk about a single card that seems a bit obscure - Trail of Mystery . This card, my dear friends, was absolutely bonkers in my deck. I had 7 morphs, and every time I got that card in early game (which was surprisingly often), it fetched me 3-4 lands and made it nearly impossible for my opponents to attack into my morphs. This card advantage/deck filtration and an ability to umorph any of my guys with +2/+2 was a game deciding factor. It obviously loses much of its power and reaches unplayability if you happen to be low on morph creatures, but 7 of them is quite enough from my experience. Do you have any other obscure/strage cards to report on?

Thanks for reading.

I went 3-2, which I was very satisfied with, since it was my first ever event. I went with Mardu. My unexpectedly awesome card was Master of Pearls , it wasn't even on my radar going into the event, but it caused some absolute blowouts, whenever I unmorphed him. I won every game I was able to pull him off.

Barrage of Boulders won me 2 games and let my 2HG team win 3rd place.

Warden of the Eye was also a game changer.

I think you are severely undervaluing Villainous Wealth ... Mark my words, that card is going to wreck people in Constructed, and it seems pretty good in Limited too. Pay 7 mana to flip 4 cards off their deck. Unless you hit 4 lands (really unlikely), you're going to get some pretty sick value. It gets even better the later the game goes.

I picked Mardu and pulled some insane cards (Sarkhan, foil fetch, normal fetch). I went 3-1, but the card that won every game I used it in? The lowly common Rush of Battle . I had a warrior sub-theme; playing Rush usually net me minimum 9 life and wrecked the opponent's field. I dropped a Trumpet Blast along side Rush one time, too, to great effect.

Villainous Wealth doesnt say until end of turn, so the judge at my event ruled that they could be cast whenever they could normally be casted even on another turn. I cant find an offical ruling on gatherer, but it Allowed be to use kill spells, that i would not of been able to use at the time.

Villainous Wealth also doesn't say "...as long as they remain in exile." like Kheru Spellsnatcher . So I assume they had to be casted that turn.

I chose Sultai. Kheru Lich Lord was my Promo and I was lucky enough to pull Sidisi, Brood Tyrant from a pack in my prerelease box and my god, she wrecked face with zombies. 2x Mystic of the Hidden Way and 2x Icefeather Aven where hard to deal with. I went 3-0, drew to top 4 and we split top 4 (there was low attendence so we had 4 rounds). My matches were against Jeskai, Temur, and then Temur again.

The first Temur match I almost lost, but a Turn 1 Despise your Surrak Dragonclaw in game 3 saved my butt. It was the only match I went 2-1 in, other 2 rounds were 2-0.
