Custom Commander

Custom Cards forum

My friends and I are wanting to do some custom commanders to play with. But, we have to vote on each others cards whether or not the card is too strong and can't be played.

I thought that having a card like Dryad Arbor as your commander would be really cool but I am not completely sure whether it would be broken or not.

My idea was something along the lines of:

(Cardname)
Legendary Land Creature - Elemental
(Cardname) is all colors and has all basic land types.
: Add to your mana pool.
: Add to your mana pool.
: Add to your mana pool.
: Add to your mana pool.
: Add to your mana pool.

I think that you are only allowed to cast your commander from the command zone so you would have to have Command Beacon in the deck to even be able to play your commander.
Should I cut some colors/land types to make this a more reasonable idea for a commander or should I just scrap the whole thing?

Please post your thoughts below!

I think it would be better to pursue a different design, because this card wouldn't really work too well for a deck.

What is even the point of having a five-color land creature as your commander? Does it offer any real benefits over any other five color general?

There are enough Command Tower-esque lands that you don't really need to pursue a commander with the same functionality. You're also introducing other complications, such as the inability to cast your commander.

I would design something that has utility you don't get from other cards.

As a note, lands with basic land types implicitly inherit the mana abilities correlated to those types. You don't need to write out ": Add to your mana pool" on a Plains (though this is sometimes included as reminder text).

Just change it to a specific land/city/area/etc that you really like in the lore and then go on with that. As everyone above me has said, there is no advantage to the 5color man land.

I'd personally recommend and either or for simply the Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle value by bouncing your commander infinitely.

W think a lot of people are missing the potential here, sure, a free fixer land is boring in commander but this is actually a creature too. At the very least, a WUBRG land commander would be a great voltron option. Epochalyptik pointed out the tapping is redundant, ability wise, but seeing as lands are colorless you would have to write it out if you wanted to use it with colors.

How about this?

Landerson

Legendary Land Creature - Elemental

Landerson is all basic land types)

You may play Landerson from the Command Zone.

Players may spend colorless mana as though it's mana of any color.

Players may pay rather than pay the mana cost for spells you cast.

At first glance this could be really powerful, but it comes with some pros and cons that compensate. Right off the bat, It's basically Fist of Suns for free. While this is great, It won't give you any sort of advantage until turn 4 in a casual match and, at the same time, all the other players get the same advantage. The other half of the ability lets all players use colorless mana as colored mana. this basically turns all your Reliquary Towers into mana fixers, everybody again wins. However, always being able to play this turn 1 means you're free to play as many utility lands as you like. aside from sharing the ability, it also balances itself out by being incredibly easy to kill. it dies to Gut Shot, any form of land destruction, and comes with nothing to keep it alive. In honesty, the only real benefit is you don't have to pay commander tax beacuse you never cast it.
