I'm putting together a set of 5 mono-color decks to use for teaching new players as well as to have a sort of old school tabletop game set. I want to be able to just pull the box out and play pretty much anytime with anyone, and teach new players quickly.

I had a similar set of 5 decks previously and I taught several new players using them, but I started modifying and improving the decks and they got unbalanced, so I'm starting over. I'm attempting to highlight major archetypes for each color to give new players an idea of what to expect if they continue playing outside of this set. I'm also sticking to the early sets...primarily Revised since that's about when I started, but dipping into Chronicles and just a touch of Fallen Empires to spice up a couple of the decks.

This is the mono black deck. It's plan is to keep things in control early on with hand disruption via Hypnotic Specter and creature destruction via Terror and Royal Assassin. It wants to get to a point of having a lot of small creatures on the board from Kormus Bell and / or Breeding Pit which can then either be pumped with Bad Moon for swarming attacks, or fed to Lord of the Pit for one big smashing attack. Dark Ritual allows for quick drops in the beginning as well as ramping into fatties in the mid / late game.
