Classic R/G "Flyswatter" Combo

Casual Aggro Combo RG (Gruul)

TheStephenation

Back when Nemesis was still fresh, I found myself enamored with Saproling Burst and picked up a playset. I used the card in a sort of Beatdown deck, with the Pandemonium + Saproling Burst combo as an instant finish. I tried some silly Pandemonium hijinks with Saber Ants and regeneration effects, but it proved too clunky. Then Invasion introduced Raging Kavu and Fires of Yavimaya. While a "Fires" style of deck would probably have been the most effective way to go, that's not what happened. Due to a quirk of the time, I wound up trading away all of my cards from sets released after Prophecy. So I threw the good old ChannelBall combo into this and, for the next several years, had an oddball deck that faked being ordinary R/G Beatdown for the first couple of turns and then won in a single turn with a combo. For the unfamiliar...

Channel + Fireball (or Kaervek's Torch) lets me pay life for colorless mana and use that to fuel a big burn spell. Since I'm playing a deck that can throw out some damage early on, I'm probably ahead on life and can pay for a big enough Fireball to win on the spot.

Pandemonium + Saproling Burst lets me remove counters in succession, triggering Pandemonium damage at my opponent, for a total of 21. Unless my opponent is using life gain of some sort, those two enchantments win on the spot, and this deck can usually find a bit more damage to finish someone off. Both cards are useful on their own, too.

I named my deck "Flyswatter." I had a reason, but I forget what it was. Back then, I'd name my decks based on all sorts of weird things. I had a black deck that I named "Septic Tank" despite the deck having nothing to do with septic tanks. I actually do remember the reason behind that name, which is a story better left for that deck, if I get around to posting a list for it. But alas, the origins of the "Flyswatter" name elude my memory. Oh well, it was a stupid name for a stupid deck. But this one actually was rather fun to play and the deck had its moments. In one multiplayer game, I took down one opponent with creature beatdown and some direct damage, killed a second opponent with Pandemonium + Saproling Burst, and finished off my last opponent with Channel + Kaervek's Torch!

While I didn't write down my exact decklist back then (or if I did, I've lost the list since then), this must be pretty close. I think I probably didn't own more than two copies of Taiga, and I may have resorted to Karplusan Forest or something. I probably also didn't actually use a full playset of Sol Ring, since I'd have been using them in other decks. Lotus Petal was in this deck at some point. Whatever, this list is close enough.

I'm toying with making an updated version of this, but the reliance on Channel is a bit off-putting.
