FNM 7-14 —July 17, 2017

This FNM only went three rounds, but they were all exhausting. I think more than 50% of the field were playing a variant of blue red. That's all i faced, but luckily my deck has a fairly good matchup against them especially when i'm on the play.

Match 1: Blue Red Thermoalchemist 2-0

The first game was pretty dicey, he played his alchemist and i didn't draw any removal so it pinged me for probably 8 damage total. He also had a fevered visions on the battlefield which hit me for 4 until i cast all my stuff and just drew cards off it. This forced me to overextend a little bit, but he wasn't running Hour of Devastation which we'll be talking a lot more about in Match 3. I ended up pulling out game one with overwhelming creatures that he couldn't 1 for 1 eventually. Game two he mulligan-ed to five and although he drew well, it just wasn't enough gas to stop me.

Match 2 Red Blue prowess 2-0

This guy played the new blue red card Bloodwater Entity It ended up serving him pretty well until it got blocked by a Bone Picker and he didn't know bone picker had deathtouch. His deck was very controlling and i'm assuming it had Torrential Gearhulk as a finisher, but i never saw it. Neither of these games were very tough, i brought in Heroic Intervention from the side and it saved me from a Sweltering Suns I still need to find an answer to Hour of Devastation though. I think more thoughtsieze effects would help.

Match 3 Grixis Control 0-2

This match was pretty tough. He had all the best counterspells and removal and quite a few top end threats. He was also one of the only people running Hour of Devastation which totally destroys my deck until later in the game. I just need more Doomfall or Transgress the Mind to pick apart the dangerous parts of their deck and i should be fine. I still see this as an overall 50/50 matchup. Game one, i just got out controlled, he handled all my threats one at a time and i didn't get any kind of god draw, so even though i got him to about 7 life, he still hit me in the face 3 times with gearhulks. Game 2, i should have won. turn 1 attune, turn 2 snake turn 3 nissa make a plant, turn 4 make a plant and play a ballista on 2 so 3 Turn 5 tick nissa down, 4/5 snake 2x 2/3 plants and a 4/4 ballista. Easy game easy life. end of my turn 5 he plays Supreme Will picking the Impulse mode. And finds Hour. Wipes my board before im about to do 16 damage on the next turn. Feelsbadman. I feel this is a lucky break on his part, even thought he got to look at 4 cards, he only runs 3 Hours, so his chances were still pretty small. Less than 25% i'd say.

Overall, i'm still happy with how this deck performs. It steals game 1 like a boss, and has a good sideboard plan against most decks. 2-1 won 7 packs and the promo!

You shut me down so bad! That first game turn 4 kill was just so nasty haha. But the whole point is to learn and adapt. I know much more after that FNM and I'm ready to make changes.

Thats good! I learned a lot too even tho i only lost a single game. I think i learned more about mulliganing and side boarding. I think i made good sideboard decisions, not only putting good stuff in, but taking bad stuff out as well. I do love your deck and I think it's positioned fairly well in the meta right now. There are a lot of energy decks out there and if you can stabilize, i think your deck is favored against a lot of them. Also, a lot of people took most of their artifact destruction out of their decks since marvel has been banned.
