Control vs Disruption —July 6, 2017

In my off hours from work, I've been play testing with whomever will play with me, and I've managed to get in a few intriguing games and learn a bit more about the deck itself. Most of the legacy deck I seem to go up against have blue in them, so they have access to Brainstorm, Ponder, and Preordain, which allows them to keep hands that would otherwise be mulligan worthy. With the amount of these decks running blue, I have been tinkering with Spirit of the Labyrinth as a two of addition to the deck. I started with one in the sideboard, but found that it didn't come up nearly as often as I needed. So I've progressed to one main board and one sideboard, but I feel as though the deck suffers a little for the change. Being that it is only strong against decks with that type of draw engine, I find that 50% of the time, the card doesn't live long enough to make an impact or doesn't affect my opponent enough to change the tide of the game. With this information, I feel that my hand disruption plan is still the better choice, as thinning their hand size, slows their advancement of the game and their board state. The above list seems the most practical for striking a balance between control the number of draws they have and disrupting their hand.

Additionally, I have been considering doing a two/two split on the main board walkers. While Liliana of the Veil's power cannot be denied, I find myself losing the first Gideon of the Trials and his emblem becomes worthless other than bluffing the second Gideon. For now, the third Liliana remains because the disruption/edict effect always seems to have more impact on the board state. I will be testing the two/two split further before making a decision.

Finally, I would like to find something to cut for the third Lingering Souls. I have found that Lingering Souls has been a powerhouse for turning the tide of a game in my favor, by either removing a Jace, the Mind Sculptor, or just as an evasive beater with equipment. I'm debating cutting a Tidehollow Sculler for this change. While it is an increase in cost, it provides more bodies and more evasion which can help close out games.

That is all I have for now. Thanks for joining me on this continuing journey into the format of legacy More to come soon.
