Goblins were my first love, so I probably can’t talk myself out of that. Cards like Goblin Shrine made it an easy decision to make. Almost everything about the goblin cards of that era were as close to perfect as you could get. Obviously not as powerful as new cards... but flavor, mechanics, and overall feel we’re all so well balanced I couldn’t help but sign on with Mons. Next I would find out about Thrulls and Homarids... the thrulls have gotten a little love, but I’m HOPING against hope that we see the homarids again soon. Dwarves and Minotaurs are definitely up there too, just for those keeping score.

Maybe because I’m an Old(tm), I’m inclined to play mono-colored decks. Goblins were my first real favorite, especially with enchantments like Goblin Warrens and the mighty Goblin Shrine! I love the art and the massive downsides that come with it. In my mind, in order to be considered one of the great cards it’s got to have a good balance of strengths and weaknesses; Goblin Shrine is a great example of that sort of structure.

Satyr's Cunning and Underworld Rage-Hound can serve as reusable sac resources

Lazotep Reaver and Goblin Instigator are cheaper alternatives to Searchlight Companion

If you focus on a Goblin sub theme, Goblin Shrine and Goblin Caves can provide good anthem abilities.

I was looking to see if Goblin Sharpshooter was pauper legal (which it isn’t) and was reminded of my FAVORITE way to kill low CMC creatures: sacrificing a Goblin Shrine .

I love, and miss, the imperfection of the painted cards. The old-time heavy-hitters like Goblin Shrine, Terror, Regeneration, Holy Strength, Stasis, and Mana Vault (there’s one for each color!) were full of motion, weirdness, mystery, and made me feel like the cards were actually unearthed from some sort of forgotten magical vault. The stuff nowadays is too...perfect, in my mind. I’ll pick a new card, almost at random: Farfinder is the second card from Ikoria I saw. The art is great, and the skill needed to make it is FAR beyond my capacity. Having acknowledged that, it’s polished to perfection...to the point of near-boredom. I really can’t get emotionally connected to it, and that makes me sort of sad. ::shrug-emoji::

Have you considered the cards Goblin Caves or Goblin Shrine? They are great ways to bump up your goblins. Also I have found that the card Goblin Flotilla can prove to be very annoying, and the card Goblin Snowman is a great way to suck massive ammounts of damage.
