worldfire and any spell that does damage
Asked by samworthy 12 years ago
I I were to cast a spell that does damage to my opponent: such as lightning bolt, but before the spell resolves I play worldfire, first would I be allowed to do that, I'm not sure what the rulings are on playing sorceries between the casting and resolution of spells works; and second, would worldfire remove the spell from the stack when I play worldfire

Interesting combos involving Worldfire though:
Oblivion Ring or Fiend Hunter a creature with haste or Kessig Malcontents and then Worldfire . The Worldfire would exile everything and bring your creature back from exile with haste or Kessig Malcontents will kill them outright with ther ETB trigger.

you could wait until your opponent plays a sorcery put a burn spell on the stack then use Counterlash to counter the sorcery and use Worldfire at instant speed

and no you would not be able to play it the way you did as it is a sorcery, and Worldfire only exiles permanents as someone before me said.

@evil_monkey: Venser, the Sojourner s +1 helps with that as well.

You could also Oblivion Ring a Forge Devil then Worldfire to kill yourself. That'd be fun.

Hypersonic Dragon as suggested before is quite good for this. That way you can stack Worldfire at instant speed onto your damage spell, like Lightning Bolt or Gut Shot , so Worldfire will go first and then the damage spell can finish up. It would a deck in good colours too (U/R), that can draw cards and specialize in instants and sorceries in general as well as plenty of cheap-ass damaging spells.

LOL all that has inspired me to make a deck that abuses that.

You know what you could do on top of that stacking? Have Curse of Echoes curse you, play Worldfire , and then stack Pact of the Titan or Slaughter Pact on top of it. They copy it, then lose all their permanents, then die no matter what colours they play. It's less efficient, but FAR sillier.

@pookypuppy6: Curse of Echoes only allows other players to copy spells, it doesn't force them to. Hive Mind however...

You can't play any spells or do anything, really, from the time a spell begins resolving to the time it finishes resolving.
If you cast Worldfire then put Lightning Bolt onto the stack above it, Lightning Bolt will resolve first, deal 3 damage, but then Worldfire would resolve, wreck everyone's shit, and set your opponent's life total to 1.

If you had a Hypersonic Dragon and cast Lightning Bolt then Worldfire would it resolve with Worldfire first then Lightning Bolt , effectively winning you the game?

Aaah, I didn't see any of that. My rules-ness sucks. :(
Okay then, Hive Mind instead of Curse of Echoes . Didn't see that it was a "may" condition.

Yes, if Worldfire is cast in response to Lightning Bolt it takes effect before Lightning Bolt . Once a spell is on the stack it stays there regardless of what becomes of its source, so Lightning Bolt will stay to resolve after Worldfire and kill your opponent.

But, I think the easiest way to accomplish this is to tap or produce 10 mana, play Worldfire then use your floating one mana to cast Lightning Bolt or Shock. Your mana pool doesn't empty until you pass your turn.

Sorceries can only be played while the stack is empty of other spells, so no, to your first question. Secondly, if you were able to do that, Worldfire only exiles permanents. Spells on the stack are not permanents.
