Will flickering a card to and from exile avoid 'sacrifice at end of turn?'

Asked by nickiru 9 years ago

I use Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and make a token. If I Cloudshift the token at end of turn, will it avoid the ability and become permanent?

No; tokens cease to exist when in non-battlefield zones when states are checked.

Because of how it's worded, though, you can get around it with Time Stop or Sundial of the Infinite ; wait for the trigger that sacrifices them to be put onto the stack at the end step, then respond use one of those two, ending the turn there and exiling the stack. They only trigger on the next end step, so they won't trigger anymore and you keep your tokens forever.

Once a token leaves the battlefield it disappears forever. That's why when you return a token to someone's hand it doesn't just stay in their hand.

The easiest way to keep the tokens with kiki is to make them during an opponent's end step. That way you get to keep them until your end step and can attack with them. That is why cards with flash are perfect with kiki like Pestermite and Deceiver Exarch

@nobu_the_bard You are correct in that tokens cease to exist if they aren't on the battlefield when statebased actions are checked. However you will notice that they are never in exile when SBAs would be checked, we don't check them in the midele of resolving a spell. There is a special rule that says, summarizing here, If a token would leave a non-battlefield zone it ceases to exist as a replacement for the zone change.

There are ways to stop the tokens from being exiled by countering the triggered abilities or ending the turn while they are on the stack. If you use Time Stop or Sundial of the Infinite while the triggers are on the stack then they will stay forever because the trigger says "at the beginning of the next end step." You could also use Stifle , Trickbind or Voidslime but each of these would only counter one spell.
