What happens when Crackling Doom causes you to sacrifice Emrakul
Asked by Ghosty_MTG 9 years ago
I was playing a game with Emrakul, the Aeons Torn on the field. Someone played a Crackling Doom forcing me to sacrifice Emrakul. Would Emrakuls protection from colored spells void him from that affect?

Emrakul, the Aeons Torn would be sacrificed, Since Crackling Doom does not damage, enchant, block or target it.
Here's a neat trick - DEBT
Whenever you see "Protection" think of the word DEBT
- D - > Damage (the card cannot be damaged by its protected type)
- E - > Enchanted (the card can not be enchanted by its protected type, lets say you have a 1/1 white token enchanted with a Spirit Mantle or something, and you Brave the Elements choosing white. The enchantment will fall off because Spirit Mantle is a white enchantment.)
- B - > Blocked (The card can not be blocked by its protected type, this usually just applies to colours eg Master of Waves cannot be blocked by anything red)
- T - > Target (The card can not be targeted by its protected type, eg. Knight of Infamy cannot be Oblivion Ring'ed because oblivion ring is a white ability)

@PremiumCola: It's worth including "equip" as part of the E in DEBT. Protection affects legal equip relationships. Really, it should be DABT because it deals with attachments, to include both auras and equipment.

@Epochalyptik : Strangely enough that never came up in my playgroup.
So lets say I tried to use Brass Squire to attach a Godsend to an Animar, Soul of Elements. The pro white would prevent that from happening? I never even thought of that XD

@ Epochalyptik: Now that it came up, I have to ask - it looks to me as you could indeed legally activate the ability PremiumCola stated (as Brass Squire's ability is neither white nor black), but right after it resolves, Godsend would "fall off" because of Protection from White... am I wrong?

301.5b An Equipment is cast and enters the battlefield just like any other artifact. An Equipment doesnt enter the battlefield attached to a creature. The equip keyword ability attaches the Equipment to a creature you control (see rule 702.6, Equip). Control of the creature matters only when the equip ability is activated and when it resolves. Spells and other abilities may also attach an Equipment to a creature. If an effect attempts to attach an Equipment to an object that cant be equipped by it, the Equipment doesnt move.
The same is true for Auras.

Ah, so you could legally activate the ability, but nothing would happen upon resolution.

Please link your cards. Use double brackets. [ [ Forest ] ], without spaces, becomes Forest.
Crackling Doom, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn.
Protection from X means five specific things: anything with that quality cannot damage, enchant, equip, block, or target the protected creature. Crackling Doom doesn't damage or target Emrakul, so Emrakul will still be sacrificed.
