Need help with Navigator's Ruin

Asked by Jaysterbaby 7 years ago

So Everytime I attack with this card out, opponent mills 4 cards, is it possible to have more then one of these on the field and would they stack., for example having two of them would mill them for 8 cards, and so on

Short answer, yes.

At the beginning of your end step, any "beginning of end step" triggers will go on the stack. For each copy of the on the battlefield under your control, a separate trigger will go on the stack and will resolve independently. So if you had 3 copies of Navigator's Ruin and you triggered raid, your opponent would mill 4 cards 3 times over.

Yes and yes. The only restriction on having multiple of the same card out is if they are legendary and multiple things that trigger off of the same event will each trigger if that event occurs.

Ok thank you, would that be the same with Sliver deck for example

Manaweft Sliver having two or more of these on the field would produce more then just 1 mana

Jaysterbaby: In that case, no. Hvaing two Manaweft Slivers on the battlefiled would mean that your slivers would have two copies of "tap: add one mana of any colour to you mana pool" however that is not the same as having one copy of "tap: add two mana of any colour to your mana pool".

Adding to the answer for the follow-up question: The key thing to know is that triggered abilities and activated abilities work differently from one another.

  • A triggered ability (always starts with "when"/"whenever"/"at") waits for the given event to happen, and triggers every time that event happens. Multiple copies of the same triggered ability will all trigger if the event happens.
  • An activated ability (always written as "[cost] : [effect]") needs to have its cost paid in order to be activated. Paying the cost for an activated ability will only activate that specific ability, not any other abilities that happen to have the same cost. Multiple copies of the same activated ability don't really do anything special (I'm sure there are some weird corner cases, but we don't need to get into that here).

So the Virulent Sliver I was told can stack poison, if you have more than one. so why wouldn't Manaweft Sliver or Gemhide Sliver stack mana?

Because your slivers will gain "tap: add 1 mana" and "tap: add 1 mana". you can only activate your tapping once so you only get one mana. Virulent Sliver is a trigger ability so if activates and you have 2 in play, your slivers will have poisonous 1 and poisonous 1. Since it is a triggered ability they both trigger separately thus giving 2 poison per sliver.

Poisonous is a triggered ability. Note the reminder text starts with the word "whenever" to indicate this. That's why it stacks. Activated abilities never stack.

OK Thank you Rhadamanthus and Grahamatica I also have the card Upwelling this would stack when I tap those Slivers and Land like Sliver Hive and Unclaimed Territory for any color Mana correct?

Upwelling is a static effect. It doesn't care where the mana comes from, just that it sits in your pool. Mana that has restrictions on it still applies (for example Food Chain) though.

Having a second Upwelling wouldn't apply any additional benefit, as your mana already isn't emptying from your mana pool. Static abilities don't fit as neatly into always or never stacking.
