If I displace Jace AFTER using all loyalty counters, does he come back in with more?
Asked by Forestxavier20 8 years ago
My friend runs a U/W flyers deck with Jace and Dovin Baan. Now, I wonder if we could reset Jace back to start by using Displace after we run out of Loyalty counters on him. Is it possible?

Your question is unclear. You can use double square brackets around a card's name to link it. It's the easiest way to make sure everyone reading your question knows what's going on. Are you talking about a Jace, Vryn's Prodigy Flip that ends up in the graveyard after you use up all the loyalty counters on the planeswalker side? If so, the answer is no, that doesn't work.
When an effect uses the name of a permanent-type card (creature, land, artifact, enchantment, planeswalker) without also saying "spell" or "card in [a zone]", then that means it's talking about a permanent of that type on the battlefield. Displace can only target creatures on the battlefield, not in a graveyard or any other zone.

But, if you do have a means of blinking a Planeswalker (like with the above mentioned Flicker) then you can cast it after the loyalty ability being used, and the Planeswalker enters the Battlefield as a "new" version, with starting loyalty, that hasn't used an ability this turn.
Note that a Planeswalker with 0 Loyalty will be sent to the graveyard as soon as state-based actions are checked, so Flicker won't save them (as it's a sorcery.) You would need to blink them at instant speed.

A Planeswalker with 0 Loyalty is sent to the graveyard as soon as state-based actions are checked, so nothing can save them, as even instants are too slow.

Oh? Good to know Neotrup... our local Atraxa, Voice of the Superfriends player has been getting away with murder!
Though it makes sense, as the cost is paid and THEN the ability goes onto the stack...

Worth noting that if you flicker a Jace, Telepath Unbound Flip he will return to the battlefield as Jace, Vryn's Prodigy Flip, and will need to wait until your next upkeep, then activate his ability to flip before you get to use him as a walker again.

Okay, thank you everyone! My friend is using a Jace, Unraveler of Secrets and one of my other friends who I play THG with uses a White/Waste deck that is a pain to go against. The reason I asked is if we can deplete him, but use an instant to resummon him, allowing us to put his Kozilek, the Great Distortion and his buffed 4/4 card

Don't forget to link cards in your example:
Dovin Baan
Displace
Which Jace are you referencing? The Planeswalker Jace is not a creature, it is a planeswalker. Displace will not work on him. You would need something like Flicker to accomplish a planeswalker being exiled then coming back reset.
