Glacial Fortress

Asked by Tekel_Brighteyes 13 years ago

Are lands like Glacial Fortress considered basic lands? For example, if I play Aven Trailblazer Glacial Fortress count towards this? Also, if it's not considered a basic land, what type of land would it be considered? And does it follow the rule that I can't have more than 4 in my deck?

There are exactly 5 basic land types: Plains , Island , Swamp , Mountain , and Forest . A land isn't basic unless it has the supertype "Basic" on its type line, and a land doesn't have a basic land type unless it has one of those listed subtypes on its type line. Notice cards like Forest and Swamp do have these types, but Glacial Fortress and Rootbound Crag don't. In fact, they only have the Land card type, no supertypes or subtypes at all.

Because cards like the fortress don't have a basic land type, Aven Trailblazer won't count them for anything (it would count something like Moonring Island ), and because they're not basic, they're limited to 4 per deck.

Thank you for your help. I do understand what you are saying. I do have one question about what you said however, I have a couple of plains and islands, that's all they are, which only say land in their type line. But even though it doesn't say basic land, it's still a basic land right?

Ah, you're right, I didn't think about that. Basic lands didn't have the supertype "Basic" printed on them until after the introduction of the 8th Edition card frame. Older printings don't have the word, but they're still basic lands. Good catch.

Ok, thank you so much for your help. I wasn't sure if it was from different sets or something and I wanted to make sure I had it right. Thank you again for all your help.

The other thing to keep in mind here is that many (dare I say most?) land search is going to specifically let you search only for Basic Lands. Cards like Evolving Wilds , Viridian Emissary , etc. This is one of the reasons (among many) that Primeval Titan is so great. You can search for Dual lands and other non-basics with his ability.

There is a little more confusion to add to the stack if you will. The old school dual lands are basic. The text says they count as both swamp and plains, or x and x. So they count as basic. Also I believe the rule book specifically states that snow-covered basic 5 are also considered basic lands. Not that that's really relevant to standard . . . but still.

The actual dual lands are NOT basic. They do not have the supertype "Basic," and their Oracle annotations specifically state the following:

10/1/2008: This has basic land types, but it isn't a basic land. Things that affect basic lands don't affect it. Things that affect basic land types do.

A snow land is considered basic if it has the supertype "Basic" - the same rule that determines if any land is basic or not.
