Firesong and sunspeaker/ painters servant combo

Asked by Into_The_Void 5 years ago

Firesong & SS was recently features on this Instagram page that I follow, after some lengthy discussion about this as a commander, another user had mentioned this and painters servant being played together and getting out of hand. I'm aware of how lightning helix works when you have FS&SS on the field, but can someone explain using painters servant. I would assume you would name white as the color, so that all your red burn spells could get the same effect as lightning helix. Is this correct? Id like to know more about this.

I've never thought of that interaction. This actually seems very powerful and like it could escalate pretty hard.

I'll be glad to learn more about this.

I think you could probably name red, but on the other hand white also works? I think the big deal is that at least one color is named.

It's good to link cards that you're discussing:

Firesong and Sunspeaker

Painter's Servant

As for how it works - I'm guessing you name white with Painter's Servant . This means that every time you cast a burn spell (making the assumption that 99.99% of burn spells are red/X) then that spell has lifelink and triggers the white spell gain life clause of FS&SS. This means that every burn spell deals an additional 3 damage. So something like Grapeshot gest really dumb, as each copy will effectively deal 4 damage.

It isn't quite as good as Lightning Helix since you only add 3 to red burn spells for each instance of damage they do, not 6. But yes, you name white (naming red doesn't work to make your life gain into bigger life gain since FS&SS deal the damage not the spell on the triggered ability) and then your burn spells deal 3 extra damage per instance of damage being dealt.

You may notice that I am being careful to say "per instance of damage". This is because FS&SS are going to trigger for each time you gain life, and different instances of damage being dealt are different instances of lifegain from lifelink. This means that Cone of Flame will give you three triggers, Fiery Confluence will give you a FS&SS trigger for each damaging mode you choose, Chandra's Fury gives you two triggers, and Fireball gives you one.
