Do halving life effects have multiplier qualities? & what Vraska to use?

Asked by BMHKain 5 years ago

I am working on redoing an old deck of mine. It's Partners Based, & one of those two Partners; Virtus the Veiled has an ability where if his (Her?) attacks connect, the life total of attacked opponent in question is halved (Say, 40-to-20.). What if there are other qualities for this involved (Quietus Spike, Wound Reflection, & Archfiend of Despair are the prime examples.), do multiplier effects trigger in some order, or whatnot? Just wanted to be sure as I already have some for Gorm the Great. Also, which do you think might be better for this; Vraska the Unseen, or Vraska, Golgari Queen for these kinds of effects (I think the latter would be better unless being damaged via outside effect does zilch... Also, Vraska, Relic Seeker doesn't do much here anyway, thus why I didn't mention her or her Planeswalker Deck versions... :/)? Unless you guys can think of something better than Blade of Selves?

There's not really a "multiplier" interaction here, you just go by the specific instructions on each card.

Let's assume the opponent is at 40 life. If Virtus the Veiled is equipped with Quietus Spike and hits an opponent, both Virtus and the Spike will trigger at the same time. You can put them onto the stack in the order of your choice but it doesn't really matter because they'll each use the opponent's current life total at the time the ability starts resolving to calculate the life loss. Whichever one resolves first will make the opponent lose 20 life (half of 40), and the next one will make them lose 10 life (half of 20).

For cards like Wound Reflection and Archfiend of Despair, you just count up all the life the player has lost this turn for any reason. If you added one of these to the example above then the opponent would lose another 30 life at the end of the turn (and would probably lose the game).

The "Deck Help" areas of the forums would be the best place to get your Vraska questions answered.

Couple points:

  1. Virtus the Veiled is a male. Interesting etymology discussion, Virtus (it's Latin, so pronounce the V like a W) was one of the four virtues expected of the Imperial family. In fact, it's where the very word virtue comes from. Specifically, Virtus was the personification of valour, courage, character--all the "manly" virtues. That said, the personification of this virtue most often has been female--she is usually depicted as a helmeted figure (akin to Minerva or Roma), but differentiated by her one exposed breast.

  2. You control the triggers, so you get to control which order they resolve in. So, on damage, you can layer it Quietus Spike then Virtus the Veiled. Quietus Spike will half from 40 to 20; Virtus the Veiled will then half from 20 to 10. For the endstep ones, let's assume the player lost 5 life. You can trigger it so Archfiend of Despair resolves, losing the player 5 life, then Wound Reflection resolves, and they lose 10 life.

  3. Gonna stay away from offering deck feedback, since that's not really the point of this forum section.
