to all of this talk about stealing creaures with cards like act of treason, there is one I have never seen anyone play, but I think could have some serious impact as a 1 of in a deck. and that is turn against. It cost five to do the same thing as the others, BUT it is at INSTANT speed. their has to be a way to break stealing their creature at instant speed, even if it is as simple as stealing one of their attackers and using it to block one of their creatures and then sacking it to husk

Wabbbit Playtested McVety's list and it's kind of wonky to play. Pretty reliant on Bedlam and Thermo-Alchemist. If I were to play spell-reliant creatures, I'd settle for UR Prowess.

I feel that a card which isn't getting any attention right now is Devour in Flames. The ability to deal 5 damage to a PW or a creature for effectively 2CMC is pretty good. I'm using it right now in my RDW as a sideboard card for high PW count decks. Though it is funny that the flavor text makes no sense since odds are that when you use this card against Obs, he will have 6 loyalty >.>

Noctem I think that spells for the likes of those with no plans of using their Ultis.. like Gideon or Nissa... You can nuke them the moment they hit the ground.

July 28, 2016 8:48 a.m.

Noctem says... #5

True, however when most of our dome damage comes up to only 3, sometimes that means you have 2 for 1 yourself in order to get rid of a problematic PW. Examples include Gideon, Nissa VoZ, ob nix, Lili, Chandra, etc.. Being able to deal 5 damage straight to a PW or creature is pretty valuable in the meta imo.

All,
I've really just started testing this deck, but I've found it surprisingly strong against Bant Company (at least against Devin Koepke's Collected Bant). If you get a chance, I'd LOVE your thoughts, and especially any playtesting results. Thanks tons!

I have a lot of questions:

1.) How's the sorcery speed late game against Spirit Queller?

2.) I'm seeing that it doesn't start off as aggro, but scales into the midrange quite well. How does it fare early game?

3.) With collective defiance, what's your primary option? I know you're not going for the burn, so I'm guessing it's the discard option...

July 28, 2016 10:31 a.m.

clayperce says... #9

snarlmkiv,

  • Seems decent (i.e., seem to have enough "deals three damage" effects). But maybe I've just gotten lucky. :-)
  • Early game is nice if the opening hand includes a Lightning Berserker, and it really tough otherwise. I've been mul'ing down to 5 for a Berserker.
  • I love casting Collective Defiance for mana symbol 2mana symbol rmana symbol r for four to a creature + three to the face.
July 28, 2016 10:42 a.m.

Noctem says... #10

Honestly the problem for the user of Spell Queller is simply that if he uses it on a burn spell and you then kill the queller, you get to recast the burn for free at instant speed. It's really not an issue for burn imo.

And yeah Collective Defiance is mainly used as clay explained. The discard and draw should only be used if you're getting flooded for example or absolutely need to discard Fiery Temper / stuff to play Bedlam Reveler.

clayperce says... #12

Yeah, the only kind of weird thing with Spell Queller is X-spells. for example, if you cast Burn from Within for mana symbol 4mana symbol r, the Queller can't exile it. But if you cast it for mana symbol 3mana symbol r, not only can the Queller exile it, but there's no value in ever getting it back (because "the player must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it without paying its mana cost").

So I've done a bit of testing on Cockatrice with my RDW list:

4-1 on Sultai Control (Ali Aintrazi's list)

2-1 on U/B Zombies

2-0 on U/W Spirits

1-1 on Mardu Control

1-2 on Bant Company (had him at one life in game three)

Um, probably because this is Standard. Please help me with my deck, Devilish Vampire Budget. Also, I believe that Furyblade Vampire is a great card for red.

YoungBen13 everyone's welcome to post their decks and get feedback here. You can even humblebrag for winning FNMs.. I would suggest Goldnight Castigator for sideboard, and replace it with Collective Defiance... This is a very awesome burn card with cheap escalate cost that can get rid of a 4-toughness creature and straight 3 damage to the face for 4 CMC...

I dont know how Lupine and Sin Prodder can go hand in hand, because the proc from Sin Prodder will keep Lupine offline. Im not entirely sold on Lupine because you need to empty your hand fast and that means running out of gas. I would probably bench Lupine and add more Bedlam Reveler in...

July 29, 2016 10:07 a.m.

YoungBen13 says... #22

Will think about subbing Lupine or Prodder. Thanks for all the tips!

July 29, 2016 10:27 a.m.

Noctem says... #23

Lupine is a terrible, terrible card. It wasn't good enough to use in a limited format like the pre-release and it certainly isn't good enough for constructed. There are so many better cards!

July 29, 2016 10:37 a.m.

YoungBen13 says... #24

Actually, now that I think about it, it works well because they'll want to give me the card to take out the prototype, but I normally only play the prototype when I have no cards in hand. And if Sin Prodder is giving me 2 cards a turn while I'm empty handed, I can usually just cast both. However, I wil do some more playtesting. Long Live Red Decks!

Finished 2-0-1 @ FNM today, for a share of first. Uncharacteristically low amount of players, so we only did three rounds. I was 2-0 and purposely drew with the other 2-0 player I was paired with so we could get more store cred.

Wabbbit says... #30

I'm working on it haha. A quick synopsis is that I beat G/B Control, Mardu Midrange, and as I said, did not play round 3. Deck performed really well, even in that small sample size. The decks I was playing against were no joke, although not Bant Company or anything, but solid decks. Collective Defiance is silly good, Lightning Berserker is still amazing, and Village Messenger  Flip seems to be a good choice. I really just need to figure out the sideboard better.

Also, here are the three Mono-Red lists that I've found that come from a credible source (so created by a columnist on a well known site, like mtggoldfish, starcity, or channelfireball, or a deck that performed well at a tournament).

Chris Lansdell's Mono-Red Aggro (SCG columnist)

Max McVety's Secret Burn (59th at SCG Open Columbus)

Austin Casey's Mono-Red Aggro (1st at SCG Super IQ Fenton)

Hope that helps with all your brewing needs!

Wabbbit,
There's actually a full handful of Mono-Red decks!

  • 3x Mono-Red Goggles
  • 1x Mono-Red Aggro
  • 1x Monro-Red Eldrazi

And yeah, hopefully at least one will do well enough to make the list(s) public! :-)

Noctem says... #37

I watched the matches he posted and some of them didn't feel like the opponent knew what he or she was doing. For instance, the BW control match was really odd to watch. Keeping Ruinous Path and others cards vs an aggro deck with mono colored creatures, no planeswalkers and a bunch of direct burn? No sir. You take those out along with other higher CMC cards and put in the 4 duress, 4 transgress, 3-4 ultimate price, 4 gideon, 2 dead weight.. Basically anything to strip the RDW player's hand and stop his advance via cheap removal.

Placed 2nd at Game Day today. Check out the FNM History part of my deck if you want the rundown. 3-1-1, but only played three matches, so 2-1 technically. Drew a round I didn't play, and won a round I didn't play (semifinals opponent dropped because it worked out in some weird way that if he did he got more credit, and he didn't want the playmat).

I know a lot of people on this thread know a thing or two about Vamp decks so I wanted to share my wife's BR Vampire deck for some opinions.

As far as mono-red RDW I'm a big fan of Thermo-Alchemist and what lies ahead for red decks everywhere as we transition away from Eldrazi, Allies, and Lovecraft to the more mechanical/elemental plane of Kaladesh. Chandra's homeworld should be full of awesomesauce for red and I'm pretty excited :)

I wanted to build another Mono-red deck that focuses more on burn as opposed to aggro, but I think I'll be patient and wait to see what we get. I think all the best/obvious uses for the Alchemist have already been discovered and shared a few hundred times so I'll try to get in on cutting edge stuff next time around ;)

So after much deliberation and 30 cockatrice playtest games later, this is the post-rotation list I've come up with. Let it be known I had it before Gerry T over on SCG did, although we differ on some choice :P.

4 Bomat Courier

3 Pia Nalaar

4 Smuggler's Copter

4 Collective Defiance

4 Incendiary Flow

3 Fiery Temper

4 Lathnu Hellion

3 Harnessed Lightning

4 Aether Hub

1 Blighted Gorge

17 Mountain

2 Falkenrath Gorger

4 Inventor's Apprentice

2 Reckless Bushwhacker

Still tweaks to be made, but I feel this is pretty solid. No Chandra, Torch of Defiance due to budget constraints.

September 19, 2016 9:02 p.m.

Noctem says... #46

So if you didn't have budget constraints you would put chandra in? What would you take out for her?

September 20, 2016 7:56 a.m.

Wabbbit says... #47

I'd probably drop either the Fiery Tempers or Incendiary Flows. Temper is just so good off of Smuggler's Copter. She'd definitely go in.

I've got a new one brewing on the stove that looks pretty delicious... I figured out a plausible way to turn Cathar's Shield and Bone Saw into burn spells that can cause up to 7 damage a piece on ETB by turn 5. Also death.

Find out how by checking out the deck here:
