Why Do the Five Titans Not Have Secondary Creature Types?

General forum

A user on the Gatherer commented that Sun Titan should have the soldier type, because it looks like a soldier and also has vigilance, an ability that is often associated with soldiers.

That led me to think that all of the titans from that cycle should have secondary types to reflect their "classes" as well as their race.

For example, sun titan would be a giant soldier, Grave Titan would be either a giant zombie or giant wizard, Inferno Titan would be a giant warrior, Frost Titan would also be a giant warrior, and Primeval Titan would likely be a giant druid or giant shaman.

What does everyone else say about this? Is it not odd that the five titans do not have secondary creature types, and, if they did, what would those types be?

I think if anything they would be more along the lines of Elementals.

Mj3913, why do you say that?

Why do they need to have additional types? It's perfectly acceptable for a cycle to have simple creature types and remain uniform to cut down on unnecessary or unintentional bonuses to any one card.

Yeah, what Epoch said.. Can you imagine how retarded it would be to use a Preeminent Captain to cheat in a Sun Titan?

Or the core set zombie support for Grave Titan .

Metroid_Hybrid: that would be very overpowered, but I still think that they need to have a type that represents their occupations, not merely the types of beings that they are. This is akin to having a Dungeons & Dragons character that does not have a class, which is very rare, indeed; almost all D&D characters advance in class levels, not race levels.

You still have yet to explain why they must have additional creature types. Magic is not D&D. Cycle design is a refined concept and doesn't require that you add incongruous characteristics to each card in the cycle "just because you can."

I'm sorry but Frost Titan's description is not specific enough. Since they are all giant pains in the ass.

Skyfolk, are you a member of MTG Salvation, as well?

No, but I frequently read your posts with my friend.

Skyfolk: and who is your friend?

And there was no way that I was not going to join another M:tG forum, since I wish to be able to interact with fellow players of this game at any time, in any location, and share my own thoughts about this game and my own custom ideas for it.

Well, it certainly seems that this thread has degraded and that no one is interested in actually discussing its main topic (that really seems to happen very frequently with many threads that I make, on virtually every forum of which I am a member), enter image description here so I suppose that there is no reason to discuss it, any further.

You should try writing in a way that people will respect. That would be a start.

It seems like you latched onto an idea and are unwilling to change your standpoint. People do not wish to just talk at someone who will not listen. You were given a reason that they only had a race, you didn't like it and so you use false attribution to say why they should have both a race and class. At that point because you were using logical fallacies and were unwilling to change your opinion people started amusing themselves by making up classes that aren't tribal but that fit the Titans.

Also what version of D&D are you playing. I don't think race levels have been a thing since 2E or maybe even 1E.

To take it a step further in explanation, your threads are often full of bizarre hypotheticals and awkward/inappropriate discussion that may/will incite arguing and hatred.

Remember this?

I hope you don't sink back into making threads like that.

Why does this have to be done? So far the only answers given are "I think they need it" and "in another system with different rules things are different." You need to be more compelling, draw from examples, demonstrate why something should be different from the way it is. You have a thesis, "Titans should have sub-types" now support it.

Example:

I don't believe the Titans should be Giants at all. A giant is a corporeal being, physically powerful but not typically endowed with abilities as varied or powerful as seen in the Titans. When I see "giant" I think Hill Giant or Arbor Colossus. If you want to get tricky maybe something like Bearer of the Heavens, which while it has a powerful ability it's linked thematically to the creature's physical size and power, not its inherent skill with magic.

When I look at the Titans I see creatures that embody their colors. Each one has two abilities, one typically a keyword ability common to their color (Inferno Titan has Firebreathing, the only one that's really different is Frost Titan which touches on 's denial/control elements) and a support ability that reinforces their role in the color pie. has reanimation of small targets, is burn, is zombies, is control, and is ramp; basically the most fundamental parts of all the colors. The word for a physical manifestation of a concept like MTG's "colors" is the creature type Incarnation.

Incarnations are cards like Anger and Purity, creatures that embody concepts and emotions the way the Titans embody colors in Magic. The only real mark against the Titans as Incarnations is that with the exception of Personal Incarnation all current Incarnations are non-humanoid one-word concepts, their physical appearance usually something more raw and undefined. I would contest that since all these beings are named "... Titan" the scheme still fits because they are concepts, just qualified and given a specific physical form.

Skyfolk, please do not think of me as being rude for saying this, but what threads I make on this forum, or any other forum, are my business, not yours. However, to assuage your fears, since joining this forum, I have been very careful to not get myself into trouble, and, whenever I have doubts about making a certain thread, I seek advice from the staff before making it, so I hope that that pleases you.

Skyfolk, could we please stop discussing this subject? I am here to discuss Magic: the Gathering and have a good time socializing with other players of that game, not to be lectured about what constitutes proper behavior.
