I have two of these guys chillin in my binder, I never looked at him ever. So I was adding cards to my trade binder here and I was like hey I will check his price, 5 bucks, why? Also what do I do with it? I dont really plan on playing white, ever. Anyone want to trade?

The original Morningtide print is $5.00. The M15 one is around $1.50.

"You mean he puts out a Daru Warchief just by attacking? Seems good." - Me, talking about him in my casual soldier tribal deck.

Hmm, I vote for Captain of the Watch over Daru Warchief .

Eh, I guess that works too. Or you could use Strionic Resonator to put both in.

I'm not sure I would say it is just for casual play. He works well at a low level of competitive play too. I know a guy that consistently wins standard FNM with Soldier Tribal and Preeminent Captain is an all star.

IMO, he's too small and slow to be an efficient attacker. You won't attack into something bigger and by turn 4, there will usually be something to stop him, even if it's a 2/3 body. I'd rather just play Brimaz, King of Oreskos or Abzan Falconer or Spear of Heliod on turn 3.

I think you are under valuing the "put a soldier into the battlefield tapped and attacking" ability. You don't play Preeminent Captain as a body, he is a way to cheat in soldiers and also to keep mana up for tricks while still playing out at least 1 creature a turn (with virtual haste).

I don't think it is stretching too far to assume a Boros Elite T1 into Raise the Alarm T2. With a T3 Preeminent Captain you are attacking on T4 with a 3/3, two 1/1, a 2/2 first strike, and what ever you cheated in with all your mana up for tricks. Boros Charm , Brave the Elements , Coordinated Assault , Dauntless Onslaught are all tricks that could cause a blow out in this situation.

Then is also how relevant the "Soldier" type is. Paragon of New Dawns , Skyspear Cavalry , and Foundry Champion are all possibilities for targets to cheat into play in the current standard that would give incredible value to your 3 drop. Lower on the curve and therefore more likely to appear but still strong possibilities are Brimaz, King of Oreskos , Phalanx Leader , and Fabled Hero .

I've been messing around with a soldier tribal deck, and while I don't have the finished deck modified, I did experiment with Paragon of New Dawns . I would nix adding that to any soldier type deck, as it's just too slow, even cheating in with Preeminent Captain . I'd rather Obelisk of Urd or Spear of Heliod and get more bang for my mana. Same with Skyspear Cavalry ; just too much cost for it. Without Cap, you're holding onto a 4cmc and 5 cmc wondering if you should play them or wait for a Cap to appear to cheat them in. I'd rather use that mana for 2 extra soldiers on the field and those deck spaces for Phalanx Leader or God-Favored General .
