Card creation challenge
Custom Cards forum
Posted on Aug. 28, 2015, 4:15 p.m. by TheNextRedDude
Ok, heres how this works. You create a card to the specifications of the person above you, then list your own card idea for the next person. I'll start.
Variety XX
Sorcery
If X is 2 or lower, draw X cards. If X is 3, put X +1/+1 counters on X target creatures. If X is 4, return X target creatures from your graveyard to the battlefield. If X is 5 or more, Variety deals x damage to target creature or player. If X is 10 or more, you win the game.
Create a life gaining multicolored Turtle with power twice it's toughness or vice versa.

Morrok, Mutated By Darksteel
Artifact creature - Insect
Indestructible
0/1
(Yes I went for the Darksteel Mutation reference. Bit boring, but fun in a Time Spiral sorta way.)
Create a permanent card with Overload.

pookypuppy6 says... #3
Ah crud, forgot to make the card legendary on my last post. That was totally the intention.
October 8, 2023 9:44 a.m.
Melek the Supercharged
Legendary Creature - Weird Mutant
Haste
Melek the Supercharged enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it, where X is the amount of mana spent to cast it.
Whenever Melek the Supercharged attacks, it deals X damage to target creature and target planeswalker defending player controls, where X is equal to half its power rounded down.
Overload (This permanent enters the battlefield with an overload counter on it.)
0/0
Interesting design space, overload on a permanent. I'm thinking it would need an overload counter on it to remind paper players that is was overloaded. In the real world, maybe an overloaded permanent could have a separate backside? That would be way easier on judges lol
Either create another or choose a different mechanic typically associated with sorcery/instant spells and make a permanent with that.
October 8, 2023 10:39 a.m.
Jade Defender
Creature - Frog Samurai
Flash, rebound
Bushido 2
When Jade Defender enters the battlefield, target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn.
2/2
Chub Toad -> Jade Avenger -> this guy, who might actually work within the rules.
Create a card with the phrase "for each (color/type/other indicator) card revealed this way".
October 8, 2023 12:26 p.m.
Widow of the Fens
Creature - Spider
Reach
When Widow of the Fens enters the battlefield, mill four cards. Each opponent loses life equal to the number of card types among the cards milled this way and you gain that much life.
Delirium - Widow of the Fens gets +2/+0 as long as there are four or more card types among cards in your graveyard.
2/4
Edit: Oh, sorry. I guess I didn't include that exact phrase. Previous challenge stands.

Chromatic Maelstrom
Sorcery
Real the top ten cards of your library. For each different color identity revealed in this way, put it in your hand and the rest into your graveyard. You have no maximum hand size until the beginning of your next upkeep. (Color identities are the different colors, or colorless, contained within the cards casting costs or ability text. This does not include reminder text.)
Nekrathosis
Legendary Creature - Zombie Wurm
Deathtouch, vigilance, trample
Whenever you cast Nekrathosis from your graveyard, you get an emblem with "Delirium abilities you control require one fewer card types to trigger or activate."
Delirium - This creature gets +2/+2 and gains lifelink and reach as long as there are four or more card types among cards in your graveyard.
Flashback
4/5
Make another Legendary Creature who can create emblems. Be sure to set an appropriate difficulty based on what the emblem does.

When ~ enters the battlefield or attacks, choose a creature type that hasn’t been chosen yet. Create an emblem with “at the beginning of each upkeep, you may distribute X +1/+1 counters among creatures with the chosen type, where X is the amount of creatures with that type you control. Remove those counters on your next upkeep.”

I’m currently making a mini-set to draft. It’s about dragons and what dragons of tarkir should’ve been. The mechanics are wintersight (whenever you scry, this creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn, Azorius), blazing X (summoning sickness happens on the second turn it’s on the battlefield, and it gets +X/+0 on its first turn, gruul), feast upon X (when you cast it, destroy any number of X with power 2 or less. It enters with X +1/+1 counters where X is the number destroyed. Maybe effects for feasting upon things with several creature types or other things. Selesnya), tempest (etb: exile an instant or sorcery from your hand with a tempest counter on it. They may have abilities that reference the cards with tempest counters on them, rakdos) and the most confusing one, deceiver X (on cast, put a revolution counter on up to X creatures. At the owners end step, put X -1/-1 counters on each creature with a revolution counter for each revolution counter on that creature, where X is the number of revolution counters among creatures you control. If this would bring a creature to 0 toughness or lower, instead remove all counters and you gain control of it. Dimir) anyways make a card with one of those mechanics. Sorry for long explainer.

How am I supposed to fit
(on cast, put a revolution counter on up to X creatures. At the owners end step, put X -1/-1 counters on each creature with a revolution counter for each revolution counter on that creature, where X is the number of revolution counters among creatures you control. If this would bring a creature to 0 toughness or lower, instead remove all counters and you gain control of it. Dimir)
As a reminder text on a card
Would you be okay if I tinker with that. Try to make it simple

When you cast ~, put a "revolution counter" on up to X target creatures. Creatures with revolution counters have "at your endstep, this creature gets a -1/-1 counter. If this makes a creature's toughness reach 0 or lower, remove all counters from it, and gain control of it.
This is the shortest I can make it

Feast upon X (when you cast ~, destroy up to X target creatures with power 2 or less. ~ enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters where X is the number of creatures destroyed this way.)
Unfortunately this one got longer
October 9, 2023 10:05 a.m.
griffstick says... #12
If I may. Feast upon X is too strong. Like WAYYY to strong. I think it should say
Feast upon X (as an additional cost you may pay . If you do destroy target creature with power X. Then put X +1/+1 counters on target creature.)
What cha think about that? mudkipdude

tempest (etb: exile an instant or sorcery from your hand with a tempest counter on it. They may have abilities that reference the cards with tempest counters on them, rakdos)
This one is not going to work. Instant and sorcery cards don't have beneficial "abilities" like retrace. Most of the abilities on those cards just don't apply to creatures.
October 9, 2023 10:22 a.m.
griffstick says... #14
Ii could say
Tempest (when ~ enters the battlefield exile an instant or sorcery card from your hand with a Tempest counter on it)
That's all it should say. Then you can say things on the card that interact with instant and or sorcery cards in exile with Tempest counters on em. Such as.
(Name) (casting cost)
Creature - Monk
if you own a instant or sorcery card in exile with mana value 4 or greater ~ has flying and ward .

What cha think mudkipdude
October 9, 2023 10:39 a.m.
mudkipdude says... #15
griffstick, the monk card is kinda exactly what I was going for. Feast upon is like creature types, like feast upon humans. Maybe it could be pay 2 for each human you destroy that you don’t control. The idea was to kinda to offer tokens or something to make a big huge dragon stronger. Deceive is probably the shortest it’s gonna be, so let’s go with that. I also did some thinking and realised that instead of deceiver, we just do deceive as like investigate. Tempest was meant to be like a shared thing between the dragons, like all of them are sharing the tempest. I think that wintersight and blazing are pretty balanced. Otherwise, they’re good

So we've now gone 7 posts. 8 including this inquiry. What's the challenge?
October 9, 2023 8:39 p.m.
TypicalTimmy says... #17
Feast Upon is basically Devour, but removal for your opponents side. Setting the CMC to 2 or less is a great balance, until you realize tokens have a CMC of 0. If you are against a token based deck, just one creature is a literal boardwipe.
Maybe have it be more like this?
Ravenous Ventmaw
Creature - Dragon
Flying
Feast Upon - When Ravenous Ventmaw enters the battlefield, you may have it fight up to one target creature. If Ravenous Ventmaw survives and the targeted creature is destroyed, draw two cards.
Scholars have hypothesized for decades as to why the Ventmaw lineage is so ravenous and feral. The truth is, their inferno cinders all flesh to ash before they can gain sustenance from it.
4/4
- Feast Upon - When (~~) enters the battlefield, you may have it fight up to one target creature. If (~~) survives and the targeted creature is destroyed, (...)
Also, I desperately need more fight mechanics in my life.

Dawilash, the Wandering Storm
Legendary Creature - Dragon
Haste, flying
Dawilash, the Wandering Storm can't be blocked except by three or more creatures.
Dawilash gets +1/+0 for each attacking red creature and +0/+1 for each attacking black creature.
Whenever Dawilash attacks alone, create two 1/1 red and black Warrior creature tokens tapped and attacking.
4/4
More of a go-wide strategy than usually gets. Also, I'm not restricting the pump ability to your creatures. Good times in the mirror match.
Create a card that offers big opportunity and big risk. Bonus points if it's not mono-black, mono-red, or black-red.
October 10, 2023 4:32 p.m.
Here's some backstory ideas for Dawilash.
Unlike Kolaghan, Dawilash takes an active interest in the day-to-day life of his followers. Even among the Kolaghan, who valued aggression and ferocity, he was widely praised for his speed and agility. This fame brought challengers who would try to ambush, outwit, or simply outrace him in a fight to the death. He never lost, simply eating non-draconic opponents and tearing the wings off dragons before killing them and letting them rot. A few bands of Kolaghan raiders learned that following him provided a steady source of dragon meat as food, and he adopted them as his branch of the clan. He is still young, but dreams of one day uniting all the Kolaghan, and all of Tarkir, under his name.

The reason why feast upon eats opponents creatures (now only power 2 or less and with for each one) is because of one combat trick which is “feast upon attacking creatures”. Anyways, challenge is create a commander that gives the first spell you cast each turn storm

Traseos, Lightning Servant

I'm not quite sure how a deck like this would function as Boros may arguably be the second least land supported guild, only behind Dimir.
But then again both blue and black have general card tutoring, which can snag you lands. Not to mention their influx of draw and extra turns to let you get those lands out into play.
So yeah, Boros may just be the worst guild when it comes to land management. And don't give me Land Tax. Anyone who's actually played it knows it sits in the battlefield doing nothing most games.
So!
Give Mustapha some land support! :D

When Geomancy enters the battlefield, each player may sacrifice a land. Each player who sacrifices a land this way gains 3 life and searches their library for a basic land card, puts it onto the battlefield, then shuffles.
At the beginning of your first main phase, for each opponent who controls more lands than you, search your library for a basic land card and put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.
I think this works in color. Cleansing Wildfire + Cartographer's Hawk, more or less.
Create a land support card
October 11, 2023 8:02 p.m.
Magmaclysm
Sacrifice any number of lands. Search your library for up to that many Mountain cards, put them onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.
My gut reaction was that this breaks the color pie into green, but honestly I'm not so sure. Red loves sacrificing lands, and this only goes and finds Mountains, which Red also loves doing. Putting them directly into play, idk, but it's at least close? -shrug- Whatever. Truth be told, I've just been sitting on the name "Magmaclysm" forever.
Edit: oh, fat rip. Ninja'd.
Terrain Shift
Sorcery
Exile target land. Its controller reveals lands from the top of their library until a land card is revealed, then puts it onto the battlefield. Put the rest of the revealed cards into their owner's graveyard.
