An Amass Commander

Custom Cards forum

Hello everyone!

Amass has long been one of my favorite mechanics, so I wanted to make a Commander deck for it, but couldn't find a good one.

Following the old advice "be the change you want to see in the world", I made one of my own!

I would like some advice and criticism on it before I try to run it in a game.

Ok, at first I thought it might need some build-in protection, but the textbox is already quite crowded as it is. Next, I considered the third ability to be off. I tend to not like these multi-layer voltrons. Then I realized: This isn't what this is. Amass isn't particarly powerful, so this is basically a way to make up for its weakness of putting all apples in one bucket. This is a surprisingly well-rounded commander that propably is a lot stronger than it seems.

When building this, be sure to include Soul Diviner.

seshiro_of_the_orochi I was thinking of removing the second clause in favor of "~ and Zombie tokens you control have hexproof." but idk if that would be too powerful.

I really like the idea of getting Amass a little more love. Do all armies have a +1/+1 counter on them by default? Barring new army cards, of course ;p that might make the commander bigger faster (for better or worse). I’m a big fan of the options this gives the player; drain everyone by creating another weaker creature vs. making an existing creature better. Theme-wise I like the grixis colors, but more importantly it also blocks out (I think) all of the green craziness you would get with +1/+1 counters. Ozolith is still going to be —-bonkers—- with this though, especially with sac outlets. It would almost be a my-token-is-the-Voltron deck lol. Attack with your army, Royal Assassin it, move the counters to Ozolith, repeat next turn (with some sort of haste). I love the flavor - good job!!!

Oh goodness - “each upkeep” means you wouldn’t need haste at all. That Voltron token would be insane. A 4/4 minimum, ready to run, every turn. Wow.

  • "criticism".

The word you are looking for is critiquing. :) This is also known as "constructive criticism", whereas just plain old fashioned criticism is basically just insulting.

First of all, I LOVE that it's each upkeep. Really makes the threat of the Army mechanic far more credible.

The second ability does favor the upkeep trigger initially but requires extra input, otherwise it's a one-and-done mechanic as you'll only ever receive one Army token at a time. That said, next to Goblins I believe Zombies are the most lucrative tribe when it comes to token creation, or perhaps a near tie with Soldiers? Regardless, that's certainly an ability to watch out for. Might even make it a kill on sight Commander.

The final ability feels out of place as nothing else about the card cares about large zombies. The counters are nice and all, but it feels distinctly dissimilar to the rest of the core design, which is wholly about token creation.

As for the 4 mana 2/3 in Grixis, I would say if you drop the 3rd ability then it'll be fine. But three strong abilities, perhaps he should be instead?

The third definition of the first usage of criticism in The Merriam Webster Dictionary is literally just the word "critique". Criticism does have a bit of a connotation of being negative, but it isn't a strong enough connotation to make the usage above wrong.

Critique; Noun - "a detailed analysis and assessment of something, especially a literary, philosophical, or political theory."

This is far more in line with what OP was asking for, so critique stands.

As a big fan of War of the Spark, this looks great! I would definitely build this if this kind of commander actually released. Eternals-tribal for sure. lol

Add in proliferate effects like Inexorable Tide, cards that care about counters like The Ozolith, some synergistic cards like Deeka, fractal theorist and the triple threat of Gleaming Overseer, Eternal Skylord and Dreadhorde Twins and that's a pretty good core of a deck!

My only bit of advice would be to make the name sound a bit more Egyptian, as the Eternals all came from Amonkhet.

KBK7101 "Laena" is actually Arabic for "bane", but point taken, I'll try and get an Egyptian name in there somewhere.

Nothing to say about your custom commander that hasn't been said, but thought I'd share this with you. It's a prototype that I made a couple years ago, and could certainly use some revision considering the sets that have come out since then:
