Thespian's Stage?

Commander (EDH) forum

What are your opinions on the use of Thespian's Stage in commander? How about compared to Vesuva? Is there a particular number of targets you need to run in order to make it effective? Anything else worth mentioning?

Thanks!

Well, it works nicely with Dark Depths since you get an instant 20/20 meatball out of it. Also Cabal Coffers interacts nicely with it, although if it gets Strip mined, you lose more.

I'd say it works best in a mono-colored deck, unless a decks strategy revolves around lands. Thespian's Stage's ability is overall pretty narrow, so you normally want something more effective than that.

I personally like Vesuva more, mainly since I would never keep a hand where Thespian's Stage was my only land. You get value if people are running bouncelands or any really cool utility lands, and it requires less effort.

cosmicteapot, it would be in two two-colored decks, one azorius, one dimir. So I'm looking to make Expedition Map and Tolaria West more versatile.

lemmingllama, I know I'd rather pay three mana at instant speed than one mana at sorcery speed, especially if that means I can change targets rather than have to guess what the best target will be all game at the loss of getting special ETBs.

I guess. It's mainly that there are only a couple clear winners that you would want, stuff like Cabal Coffers, Minamo, School at Water's Edge, etc. Plus if your playgroup runs a lot of utility lands, they'll likely Strip Mine your lands if they are getting out of hand.

I would run both Vesuva and Thespian's Stage if I was going to run them in my deck.

Vesuva is faster and easier to copy with, but Thespian's Stage can act as one colorless mana the turn it's cast and upgrade itself later. If you're using these for control, Thespian's Stage has the ability to change anytime you want (especially at the end of an opponent's turn if you didn't counter any spells). Since both of these lands are pretty good, I'd try testing them both and figure out which ones you'd like to use.

I like thespian mainly because it can re-copy. And in a dimir deck well... Two Academy Ruins or two Cabal Coffers puts in some serious work.

PValBlanc I too would love to have 2 Academy Ruins, but unless you have a Mirror Gallery in play, that won't work.

Damn. Forgot it was a legendary. Sorry 'bout that.

I do love to copy karoo lands with it though, copying one of them on turn 2 gives you (at least) 5 mana turn 3, which is awesome.

In general, I find that Thespian's Stage and Vesuva are only worth running if you're playing particularly strong non-legendary utility lands like Cabal Coffers or if your meta is full of such cards. Then again, I tend to play with highly optimized land bases, so I'm disinclined toward ETB-tapped lands. Your mileage may vary.
