Chulane or Roon?

I'm curious to hear opinions on who you all think is the better general for a creature heavy blink/flicker/ETB style of deck. Roon of the Hidden Realm is the classic Bant flicker general of choice, but the draw/ramp + bounce option on Chulane, Teller of Tales is very appealing.

Chulane is going to be one of those commanders that draw agro. If someone sees Chulane in your command zone they will want to kill you quickly.

Roon on the other hand is something I don’t think will have the same impact. I have a friend who had a Roon deck for awhile, and the only issue our group had with the deck is that he would plot out his turn forever because he had so many choices.

By contrast I built a Chulane deck that will also take long turns but mine is creature storm. I told my friends when I built it I fully expect it to do its thing once, and never be able to again

Chulane is better overall but as already stated, might draw some more hate. If your group is more casual I would go roon. If they are fine with combos, go chillane

Thank you fadelightningmm & GhostChieftain. You're right in that Chulane is more geared toward combo, but I'm wondering if he'd be a worthy value engine on his own in a generic non-combo creature based ETB deck. The reason I ask is because I've been running Roon for years and although he can be effective, he can also be slow and relies on having a few ETB dorks out. I'm thinking that swapping him out for Chulane with the exact same deck could add some gas/value.

I may have just answered my own question but I'm still curious to hear if anyone else has tried this strategy with Chulane because most of the Chulane decks I see on here seem to aim to combo out with Food Chain etc. I should probably just try it out, see how it plays.

I play in a semi-competitive playgroup, far from cEDH but definitely on the upper end of "casual" powerlevel. I run a Chulane value engine deck that would probably draw hate in lower power groups, but he's pretty par for our group, and the deck does pretty well imo. I run a lot of ETB, additional creature cast/etb draw effects like Soul of the Harvest and Beast Whisperer , landfall effects like Admonition Angel , Roil Elemental , Tatyova, Benthic Druid , and have a secondary wincon via Approach of the Second Sun .

Imo Chulane and Roon run different builds though, even as value engines. I think both can be used to great effect, they just have different ways of going about it.

Forkbeard if you already have a Roon she’ll try swapping out the commander and see how it plays. I definitely see the fun in Chulane food chain, but depending on the meta that’ll get hated out quickly.

Most of the EDH personalities I follow have declared Chulane kill on sight. If he last a rotation it’s almost certainly over.

I run a Chulane deck that is very strong... Not quite cEDH but it is up there. I will admit that when Chulane hits the field you need to kill him. Chulane is absolutely broken. He is also one of my favorite decks. I have played against room decks and in my experiences room is broken I. A different way. Room is very slow and bogs the game down till he finds his win condition. Chulane if he sticks can power out his win con and win by turn 4 or 5, but again that is my experiences with Chulane. It all depends on what your group is ok with and what you find fun playing.
