Drawing into consistency —Aug. 23, 2021

Wanted to get a bit more Impulse draw into the deck, and also change up the type/velocity of that draw. Also trying out a new theft effect.

Out

  • Share the Spoils - This is a bit late, but it was quickly replaced by Chandra, Fire Artisan. Each time I play tested it, I ended up exiling something I didn't want to give my opponents access to. Will still keep in consideration.

  • Chandra, Fire Artisan - Nothing necessarily wrong with it, but I wanted to try out something a little bit faster/more explosive

  • Faithless Looting - Didn't synergize as much with this deck and wanted to try something else.

  • Gonti, Lord of Luxury - Disrupting 4 cards and stealing one is fine, but would definitely be better with Blink effects for re-use.

In

  • Commune with Lava - Wanted an instant speed draw effect to draw on someone else's End of Turn.

  • Ignite the Future - Was on the fence to include either this or Commune with Lava, and decided "Why not try both"? With Ignite, I know I'm always getting 3 cards for 4 mana, and has the option for the free plays with Flashback

  • Mindleecher Replacing Gonti (for now). This can Mutate onto 17 of 22 creatures in the 99, as well as Prosper. I figured it would be better to hit all opponents simultaneously with the theft, vs just one opponent with Gonti. Similarly to Gonti and Blink effects, this would be better with more Mutate creatures, or bounce to hand effects to recast and re-mutate it.

Not for nothing, but have you seen the Smog combo go off yet in either capacity? If so, how did it do?

I haven't played any games recently to try out the combo yet Kalkris. I will be playing a bunch of games on 8/28 for a friend's birthday party. Our play group is going to do an afternoon of games & turn it into a tourney of sorts.

In go-fish playtesting, I've "pulled off" the combo about 3 times, once with Storm-Kiln & Reckless Fireweaver, and once with Sedgemoor. I think each time I pulled off the combo, I had Pyroblast or Tibalts Trickery either in hand or in Impulse Exile for potential interaction.

I'm hoping to pull the combo off at least once irl
